In fact our erstwhile columnist Taylor Brown snapped a pic (above) of the current demonstration near the Confederate Soldier Monument – which is located next to the flag’s former location on the north lawn of the State House.
For those of you appreciative of the calm, we’d advise you not to get too accustomed to it … we’re just a few days away from all hell breaking loose again.
Specifically, we’re referring to a planned Ku Klux Klan rally which has drawn the attention of several local black gangs.
According to a source close to these gangs, the decision to lower the controversial banner has caused much of the tension surrounding the KKK event to subside. In fact several gang leaders reportedly reached an agreement over the weekend not to follow through with their plans to disrupt the white supremacists’ gathering (which is scheduled for Saturday, July 18).
Of course while the gangs are urging their members to stay home, we’re told several black nationalist organizations are preparing a “show of force” in response to the planned rally.
Which means the potential for violence remains …
The flag was lowered last week in the aftermath of a contentious debate in the S.C. House of Representatives … one which has seriously strained relations in state government (and launched a curious congressional campaign).

I’m no moonshine expert – I hate the taste. However, I did drink it as a kid from some illegal shinery.
I cannot imagine that stuff is legal today at that alcohol content – it was more like crazy shine.
Luckily I am a happy drunk — I spent hours talking to some really unattractive girl, who was insecure, and I felt sorry for her. I told her her how pretty she was and how much she had going for her. I was the laugh of the small town the next day, but I smiled inside.
I’ll never tell her name, for two reasons: 1) I can’t remember it, it was some 30 + years ago. 2) If I could, I wouldn’t, because I’d feel bad later, she was very nice.
Had I been drinking the regulated stuff, I wouldn’t been so nice – Ha!

Just go buy you some George Dickel (white label 90 proof – not that clear shit that Dickel is pushing these days) for no shit Tennessee sipping or Maker’s Mark for the best Old Fashioned.
An alternative is “Ancient-Ancient Age” burbon whiskey. Damn good “bang for the buck” and almost as good as George Dickel white label at a better price.
Forget about trying commercial moonshine (or any moonshine for that matter – it’s just a trend) UNLESS you are making it for yourself.

I’ve had some mighty nice tasting whisky in my life. But nothing can touch the bottle of Cuervo Gold my brother brought me from Mexico. I relished every mind-numbing swallow right out of that bottle. Never found another bottle in all the years since with that same liquor in it.
When I was working as a firefighter at White Rock station in California, after working all day cutting a fire break into dry grass with a McLeod, I drank the single most satisfying beer in the universe.
The second most satisfying beer was consumed with my back against a tree while my crazy friends swung from a rope into an irrigation ditch.

When I was 8 years old back in “West by God Virginia” they busted a still “up the holler” from our two room school house (that’s right two room school house!!). We went up there after the “revenuer’s” left with the kettle and copper tubing in tow.
I’ll never forget seeing a rat floating in the mash barrel. I know “real” moonshine when I see it and learned how to know the proof by the “bead” when I was a kid (known in scientific circles as the amount of surface tension in a liquid – got one hell of a basic education from that two room school house – helped me get 2 science degrees and one business degree).
Anyhoo, after seeing that rat in the mash barrel I’ve never really touched the stuff. I’ve taken a social sip or two over the years but I don’t drink the stuff for that reason alone.
Most of the shit you see is flavored anyway just to mask the taste.
Only commercial “shine’ I’ve sampled is the “Dark Corner” shine from the Greenville distillery downtown. It tasted like the schnapps I drank in Germany when I was in the service. I mentioned that to the head distiller and he told me that I was the 3rd or 4th guy who had been stationed in Germany to say that……………..
No alcohol buzz will ever beat reefer or hash (so I’ve been told….)

I hope that Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has the forethought to plug in the refrigeration unit on his temporary morgue so it will be cooled down for use by Saturday afternoon because I truly believe he will need it when the KKK and blacks come together at the monument.
