We must be doing something right!

This week (as many of you noticed) our website was hit with a major, malicious cyber attack.  This assault was even worse and more sophisticated than last fall’s massive election night hack.

Who’s targeting us?  And why?

Who knows … it could literally be anybody.  All we know is if they’re trying to shut us up … we must be saying something that scares them.

Anyway, we apologize to our readers for the disruption in coverage and appreciate everyone’s patience as we worked to resolved the issue.

Well its not anyone in the legislature. Most of them are still trying to figure out how to program their VCRs.

Rest assured that after they figure out how to get it to stop blinking “12:00” they are on to hacking FITSnews.

Hacking a site — not only is it not easy — it is illegal. NO ONE is going to waste their time or energy hacking FITSNews. Who would risk going to jail over a site that is already in jeopardy of losing? Last I read this site was being sued.

Hacking requires skill, skill that I don’t have, but anyone who does — they aren’t looking to hack a lowly media site. They would not risk jail time to go after a site that means absolutely nothing in the big picture.

You have to ask yourself TB — who would do that for a site like this? Very few in politics have the money and those who do are not going to risk status to take down FITSNews, not when a 50% share can be bought for some 30k or so.

No one cares enough to do that. This site isn’t worth that. Cheaper to buy it out than find a hacker to hack it.

May common sense prevail.

You’d be surprised what bored teenagers can do from the comfort of their bedroom/basement. As for why they’d pick on Fits, why not, little chance LEO’S would put any effort into catching then.

Not surprised at all at what can be done. I would be VERY surprised if they took the time to take down this site. Far easier ways for that to happen.

IF in fact this site was hacked — that is illegal. Should be fairly easy to contact FBI and find out who the perpetrator is. Most are sloppy and get caught.

If I don’t see a follow up report and a case number. I am writing this off as nothing more than hype to draw attn. to the site.

We all should be looking for a follow up vs. believing in some conspiracy concocted. Who the heck would want to hack THIS site?

I know GOP doesn’t like this site, but they could buy it far easier than they could afford to hack it.

Let’s look for a follow up on hacking of the site and SPECIFIC’s not claims.

Seriously? You are going to say your site was hit by a cyber attack and that is why all the aliases started acting crazy in the comment section? Stranger things have happened I suppose…

Reply
The Buzzman July 15, 2015 at 3:13 pm

The site was actually down for several hours. All the “aliases” often “act crazy” because Disqus give the option of not logging in when we comment. That means any user ID can be “spoofed”, meaning faked. So, most often, what is happening is fake versions of fake names.

Using Facebook for a commenting system would solve the problem. But the result would not be nearly as entertaining.

As the old saying goes, you have to go with your gut. I’ve punched myself in the gut because I didn’t want to see what was right in front of my face. It is my strong opinion, that the majority of the aliases who comment on FITSNews are either WF or his slim staff.

For those that come on here day after day, see comments day after day, put them together like a puzzle and realize there are some overlapping pieces – we eventually have to admit what we are seeing is not true.

Were the articles attacked too, because I am reading a lot of crazy there too. For a site that claim libertarian, both big and small – it is’t making the cut.

What I see are articles that are intended to incite Anarchy. The very foundation is fear, anger, hate and inequality. A closer examination is needed.

Next time you get slapped and trash talk – just remember, it likely stems from the maker of the site you are defending.

The Buzzman July 15, 2015 at 10:04 pm

Some say that anarchy is the ultimate form of libertarianism. I just don’t think that’s what Will is all about. My own gut tells me that. The fact that your gut and mind don’t agree on this, even though we do agree on so much, dear friend, only mean that we are not the same person. It’s kind of like two different theocratic “Christian” conservatives getting completely different marching orders from the voices in their heads that they imagine to be God Almighty. Except that we’re smarter than them. And far more attractive ;)

Listen, old Grand Tango has long posted on many more blogs, forums, listserves and comment threads than just FITNews. His running-dog-lackey “pogo the flipper” was dogging me on “The SNOB” for years before he started doing it on here, too. Squishy … well who the hell knows? But really, do you think it’s likely that Will, Karl, and the few stringers/contributors on here actually take the time to create all of these different characters we know for sure, and all the fake other sn’s they use? No. These are driven, crazed individuals who have latched on to this site. And MOST of the most obnoxious ones are that fucking asshole “pogo.”

But please, don’t ever lose that paranoid edge completely. It really is a good coping skill in navagating the shark-infested waters of South Carolina politics.

Reply
Lynn July 15, 2015 at 4:25 pm

It doesn’t matter what account you use. See here is how it works. We each have an IP address, at least one, some more than one, that is assigned to our email address or even our Disqus address. So it doesn’t matter what you do, how you sign in, what email you use, what front you use. This site has the ability to collect email addresses and IP addresses, it is easy to put together from there.

I’ve used Google Analytics – I know how it works. I’ve never bounced email addresses, only seen location via site visits, but the site I was administering did not have a comments section with email addresses/facebook/disgus/google + and/or twitter associated.

Read the Privacy terms – I bet you it’s covered.

If you don’t know how to secure your site, then you probably shouldn’t be in the internet blog business. Just sayin’.
WordPress is very easy to secure…if you’re not a dumbass. Is Mace still running the server?

Reply
Lynn July 15, 2015 at 4:29 pm

I am not as familiar with WordPress security of late, in the past it was almost non-existent. I am more familiar with DreamWeaver….the security is server side, not software. Unless they have changed a LOT in recent years.

Reply
Stupid Admin July 16, 2015 at 10:54 am

Yep. Basic Linux security is the base, then a little extra on whatever program you may choose (WP, Joomla, etc). Like most of the front end programs, if you screw up the Linux side, your site will be venerable no matter what you do in the software. Microsoft based sites can be a bit more difficult to secure, IMO, and I don’t normally go that route. Until recently I had a site running Apache on MS but that site was decommissioned.
I’ve noticed a significant increase in hack attempts in my logs in the last week or so. The things they are attempting are easily stopped…like removing the admin account, etc.

Praying Mantis July 16, 2015 at 11:29 am

“SSH Brute force attacks are here to stay. As long as people use weak passwords, the bad guys will be trying to brute force them. Not only for SSH, but we often see brute forces via FTP or to admin panels (Plesk, WordPress, Joomla, cPanel, etc).

As for protecting your self against these, the first option is to use SSH keys (and disable password authentication). If you can’t do that for whatever reason, make sure to use strong and good passwords. We also recommend whitelisting which IP addresses can login to the server and block everyone else out. For a reactive measure, we recommend using OSSEC (open source IDS) to block those attacks if you can’t use white listing.”

Reply
Stupid Admin July 16, 2015 at 11:47 am

Agree. I always rename the wp-login.php, rename and move the wp-admin page, modify .htaccess and setup whitelists to access the admin page with only the IP address(es) that will be used for admin purposes (when I can). Add the Limit Logins plugin and I feel pretty good about WP installations. I haven’t looked at OSSEC yet…thanks for the tip.

She should have taken those keys to his face. Seriously when I am out and about, I don’t carry a gun, I have a key ring that weighs about 5 lbs. (a lil hyperbole there). I wouldn’t waste my time with the panic button, that key ring loaded with keys is a great weapon.
