PRESIDENT TO TRAVEL TO CHARLESTON, S.C. FOR MEMORIAL SERVICE
|| By FITSNEWS || U.S. President Barack Obama will attend funeral services for S.C. Senator Clementa Pinckney – one of the victims of last week’s horrific, racially motivated church shooting in Charleston, S.C.
Obama’s attendance at Pinckney’s memorial service – scheduled for Friday at TD Arena on the campus of the College of Charleston – was announced Monday by the S.C. House Democratic Caucus.
Pinckney, 41, was the pastor at Mother Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston, S.C. He and his church were specifically targeted by “Holy City Massacre” suspect Dylann Storm Roof for his murderous rampage. In fact Roof reportedly asked for Pinckney by name and sat next to him at a Bible study at the church for nearly an hour before killing him and eight other people at the church.
Roof – a 21-year-old white supremacist – later told police he almost didn’t go through with the attack because the people at the church had been so nice to him.
Pinckney is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and two children, Eliana and Malana.
First elected to the S.C. House of Representatives in 1997 (at the age of 23), Pinckney served in the State Senate from 2001 until his death. Ironically, he was among those who organized rallies in the aftermath of an April shooting of a black man by a white police officer in North Charleston, S.C.
Obama has paid just one prior visit to the Palmetto State since becoming president – a trip which resulted in S.C. governor Nikki Haley‘s Facebook page blowing up with all sorts of racist rhetoric.
Let’s hope things are calmer this time …
UPDATE: Obama won’t just be attending the event, it turns out he’ll be eulogizing Pinckney.

The funeral itself will be a huge traffic nightmare regardless of who attends. That little hand-holding event yesterday didn’t increase traffic flow over the bridge.

That is how its always normally been done with past visiting POTUS to the area. But who’s to say they break the norm. It would help reduce one big mess of traffic jams everywhere if Obama landed by chopper some where in the city. He could set down right across from the main Charleston City Police Station. But I could not careless. Just hate to see so many inconvenienced by his presence, those in his circle that will show, and all the other people who will fly in to Charleston for this funeral. But then, its a national tragedy. This was a Christian church and a community that was terrorized by a sick kid. It has shocked the nation. But the fact is, Rocky, Obama visiting with Joe Biden in tow and so many more of the influential elite, people will flock to the city from all over in hope of getting a glimpse of them all, or at the least their motorcades. The Charleston City Police can not possibly handle traffic during this. They will have to get assistance from all over the state to help out. But it will still be one big snafu of a mess that will last for several hours on end.
