The S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW) is preparing for another round of layoffs – its third reduction in force in the last six months.
It’s unclear at this point how many jobs will be eliminated, but sources tell FITS the layoffs are focused on the information technology and labor market information sectors of the agency – which employs nearly 1,000 people.
No word yet on how the agency plans on handling the layoffs …
News of the force reduction comes three weeks after SCDEW’s embattled director Abraham Turner resigned his post at the agency – which has been plagued by rampant mismanagement and corruption.
One Democratic lawmaker referred to SCDEW as “an absolute embarrassment.”
He’s absolutely right …
Just last year SCDEW doled out $54.5 million in “improper claims,” according to data from the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL). In fact over the last three years the agency has an improper payment rate of 14.7 percent – one of the highest in the nation.
