RIFT EMERGING IN EARLY VOTING SC?
|| By FITSNEWS || Several politicos close to U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford say the congressman and former two-term governor is “disappointed” over a staffing decision made by 2016 presidential contender Rand Paul.
Meanwhile, they’re “irate.”
Paul – who represents the more libertarian leaning wing of the “Republican” party – announced several key members of his 2016 staff this week. Leading his South Carolina effort? Chris LaCivita – an establishment consultant who gained fame for his role in the “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth” organization that attacked then-U.S. Sen. John Kerry in 2004.
Why would Sanford be miffed by this choice? Well, at his darkest hour five-and-a-half years ago, LaCivita had a knife to his back. In 2009 – as longtime FITS readers will recall – LaCivita was on the leading edge of an effort to oust Sanford as governor in the aftermath of his first political implosion.
“I need to get this guy out,” the Pennsylvania native wrote in an email referring to Sanford – who had just tearfully confessed to having had an extramarital affair with Latin lover Maria Belen Chapur.
He later said he wasn’t trying to oust the “Luv Gov,” just “professionally seeking information and sources from people I thought I could trust.”
LaCivita was employed at the time by former S.C. lieutenant governor Andre Bauer – who later fired him.
It’s not clear if he’s done any political work in the state since then, but several Sanford staffers with long memories said they made sure their boss remembered LaCivita’s history.
“Beyond the personal rub with Mark it’s an inexplicably bad hire,” one told us. “The Bush swift boat warrior? The guy who advises candidates to avoid the Tea Party? This is the South Carolina face of the Rand Paul campaign?”
Another Sanford confidante told FITS LaCivita’s hiring could jeopardize a potential endorsement from Sanford … to the extent that’s something any of the “First in the South” presidential aspirants still want.
“It’s cause for pause for him,” the source told us. “And Mark isn’t big on issuing endorsements to begin with.”
Not all those in Sanford’s orbit shared that view, though …
One of the governor’s campaign advisors referred to LaCivita’s South Carolina history as “very inside baseball stuff.”
“He’s not the first guy to try to screw (Sanford) …won’t be the last either,” the advisor told us. “Rand endorsed Sanford when no one else would touch him. That’ll outweigh any baggage Chris would personally bring.”

Bad hire for who? Rand is trying to win by cozying up to the establishment, which Mark is not a part of, because of “inexplicably bad personal decisions”.
How hypocritical is Sanford? Who is he, to judge anyone’s personal decisions when he continually shows everyone he can’t manage his own personal life?
Bleh. What a pig Sanford is…don’t forget that Ron Paul also endorsed his dumb ass as “payback” for GOP primary support even AFTER he open his veins in the national press and told everyone about his “soul mate”…and now Sanford has the gumption to bitch about some tertiary hire by Rand Paul?
Do your job Mark Sanford and stop worrying about what other people are doing. Try to avoid any more judgement on people Mark…you don’t have the track record that allows you even the slightest amount of sanctimonious behavior you prick.
