We don’t get it. Previous generations of black leaders worked incredibly hard to earn their people the right to vote … yet they monolithically vote for candidates perpetuating their own exploitation and dependency. And their dumbing down.
Anyway … this piece is a knock on “whitey,” though.
According to a new study released by the University of Delaware’s Center for Political Communication, white voters are more likely to support voter ID laws – or laws which require voters to present a valid government identification card prior to casting their ballots – after they are shown images of blacks in the voting booth.
The survey of 1,436 white adults found 67 percent of whites supported voter ID when shown an image of other whites casting ballots. When an image of a black person casting a ballot was shown, that number jumped to 73 percent.
“Our findings suggest that public opinion about voter ID laws can be racialized by simply showing images of African American people” one of the researchers noted. “The resulting increase in support for the laws happens independently of — even after controlling for – political ideology and negative attitudes about African Americans.”

Blacks and whites support voter ID laws … overwhelmingly. In fact according to a 2012 Pew Center study, 79 percent of whites and 64 percent of blacks believe that all Americans ought to show an ID before voting.
We think the issue is ridiculous … and have consistently said so.
In fact we think it’s deplorable that “voter ID” was such a huge controversy in our home state of South Carolina … while a flagrant example of election fraud (one that cost taxpayers $1.2 billion) has yet to even be investigated.

While it may be true that “there is no voter fraud” (it’s not but for the moment, let’s say that’s true) many supporters of “voter ID” are beginning to believe that there must be something to the idea that there is voter fraud being committed if only because of the volume of protest from the same suspect crew – Jessie, Al and company.
Don’t over-think this issue; you may end up biting yourself in the backside.
Right. While terribly slow and cumbersome, we really need to go back to paper ballots or similar system which does not so readily lend itself to rigging or like sabotage of the results.
Actually, the fervor for Voter ID laws by the GOP, despite the lack of evidence of fraud makes me certain its goal is voter suppression. So desperate is the GOP to pass these laws, that at some point someone lets the cat out of the bag. Like the legislator in PA and the political consultant in SC, both of whom inadvertently admitted the goal was to reduce the number of minorities voting.
Voter ID laws have one goal and one goal only. Make it more difficult for minorities, poor people, and college students to vote. If that were not the case there would be comprehensive reform movements. They would include the far more likely forms of election fraud, like hacking voting machines. But Republicans don’t really care about that. They don’t believe that is happening any more than they believe there are people out there secretly organizing hundreds of thousands of black people to vote two or three times.
The South Carolina GOP was so desperate to pass these laws, they could barely contain themselves when the SC gutted the voting rights act. Despite the fact that if there is voter fraud in SC by Democrats it is the most unsuccessful fraud in history. Republicans run everything in this state.

Well of course it is. It’s always been about making it difficult for minorities and elderly to vote because the vote Democractic. Their first foray into the realm was to mail out voter confirmation cards, and if yours came back from the post office as undeliverable – then they moved to have you taken off the voter rolls. Of course they only did it in predominately black areas. When they got their ass handed to them by several states for that tactic in 2004, and then got their asses handed to them by the Dems in 2006 and 2008 – the moved on to See the Black Panthers – the Black Mambas – they’ze votin illegal and not showin’ their ID and scarin’ off whitey voters. It’s always been a farce. You want to provide voter ID cards to show (which they already do) but ad a picture – then pay to set up people outside Bi Lo and other grocery stores, where you take your Voter ID, it gets scanned, they take your picture, and give a new one right there. Now everyone gets one. But what they want to do is put the issue onto elderly people who can’t get around, or minorities who may lack some of that documentation – like dez didn’t give me’z a birdth certificate whenze I was born in the barn – to make it more difficult.
Only white privilaged (or trailer trash) should be allowed to vote. Screw Sherman and the outcome of the Civil War.

As for your choice of fundamental rights, Generally accepted by who? All of the rights you name are essentially meaningless if you cannot vote. The most fundamental principal of our nation is government by the consent of the governed. The right to vote is absolutely fundamental. Without that right liberty does not exist. The law can be changed by those who can vote and thus your rights are determined by the people who can vote. Nonvoters become nothing more than second class citizens.
And your argument concerning your 11 year old is frankly crap. No rights are absolute. You can lose not only fundamental rights, but inalienable rights. We kill criminals, we imprison criminals. They are deprived of all three of the named inalienable rights.
As for minors, they have no right to self determination, no right to liberty, no right to peaceably assemble, no right to freedom of association, no right to freedom of movement, no right to freedom of religion, even the rights of minors to due process of law is very limited.

No, I didn’t make this up, these “fundamental rights” were “made up” by the UN in 1948 with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – a document the United States signed and adheres to.

We don’t live in the UN. We live in the US. Of course voting is not a fundamental right in in a lot of nations of the world, but it is a fundamental right in the United States. Just because these are the only rights the entire UN would sign on to is irrelevant as to a determination of what the fundamental rights of US citizens are.
Every US citizen eighteen years of age or older has the right to vote, unless he or she loses that right because of criminal conduct or incapacity. That is about as fundamental as it gets. As I said before, without the right to vote you have no liberty. Government derives its just power from the consent of the governed.

What individuals believe about voter ID laws is irrelevant. Opinions don’t make any issue right or wrong. If you had surveyed voters in SC in 1948 about Jim Crow, the response would have been overwhelmingly favorable. Would that have made it right? The prevalence of voter fraud is Republican shibboleth perpetuated to suppress voters likely to cast ballots for Democrats. It is a political tactic.
My heart goes out to all the poor underprivileged white men in South Carolina. They are soooooooooo discriminated against. Poor things. They think the world is stacked against them because they are white and all the blacks are getting everything.
