GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump has rocketed to the front of the “Republican” field on the strength of his bombast and bluntness. Now he’s looking to maintain that lead by launching his first paid television ad of the 2016 election cycle.
Trump’s first ad – entitled “Make America Great Again” – will hit the airwaves this week. According to his campaign, the ad will run in early-voting Iowa and New Hampshire beginning on January 5 – and will be supported in those states by “at least $2 million” per week.
The ad seizes on Trump’s two most controversial proposals – a temporary ban on Muslim immigration to the United States and the construction of a wall on the U.S.-Mexican border (one paid for by Mexico).
“The politicians can pretend it’s something else, but Donald Trump calls it radical Islamic terrorism,” the ad’s narrator states as images from last month’s mass shooting in San Bernardino, California appear onscreen. “That’s why he’s calling for a temporary shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until we can figure out what’s going on.”
The narrator adds that Trump will “quickly cut the head off ISIS – and take their oil – and he’ll stop illegal immigration by building a wall on our Southern border that Mexico will pay for.”
Establishment “Republicans” have attacked Trump for his views on Mexican/ Muslim immigration, but the GOP electorate has embraced his ideas.
“I am leading in every poll by wide, double digit margins,” Trump said in a statement accompanying the release of his new ad. “We have tremendous crowds, incredible support from all over the country and I am $35 million dollars under budget. We have spent the least amount of money and have the best results and this is the kind of thinking the country needs.”
Trump added that he wasn’t sure if he needed to spend money on television advertising, “but I don’t want to take any chances because if I win we are going to Make America Great Again.”
