MIDLANDS LAWMAKER LAUNCHES ANOTHER DRIVE TO HELP LOW-INCOME CHILDREN
|| By FITSNEWS || S.C. Rep. Kirkman Finlay is hosting another back-to-school bash this summer in an effort to provide school supplies to children in need. His group – Finlay Scholars – will host an event from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday, August 9 in the parking lot of Staples (4464 Devine Street) in downtown Columbia, S.C.
In addition to free school supplies for their children, low-income families who attend the event will receive a free hot dog dinner from the Pawleys Front Porch food truck. Local disc jockey D-TEC will be spinning records and there will be a bounce house for kids.
Last year’s gathering provided school supplies to more than 350 children – and served up more than 400 meals.
“We want students to go back to school fully prepared and ready to learn,” Finlay said. “We expect a larger crowd this year and plan on distributing school supplies to 500 students or more, as long as supplies last.”
Richland County, S.C. councilman Damon Jeter – who partners with Finlay to put on the event each year – encouraged citizens to support the organization’s work.
“The beginning of the school year is a tough time for families with limited means,” Jeter said.
Finlay’s organization is named in honor of his father, former Columbia, S.C. mayor Kirkman Finley, Jr.

While this website continues pushing for free market reforms to address widespread poverty in the Palmetto State, we commend elected officials like Finlay and Jeter (and their sponsors) who are lending a hand to those in need.

Kirkman is one of the good guys.
Finlay is filthy rich for no other reason than his Hampton ancestors owned over 3,000 slaves… Hey black kids, here’s a free hotdog!

Thing is, you should keep in mind he doesn’t even have to hand out free hot dogs & school supplies.
Now some might say it’s white guilt that’s driving him…but you can’t argue the net gain regardless…even if it’s small in your estimation. You could always out-do him by going down there yourself and handing out school supplies and hot dogs- just to prove a point.

Finlay might get some relief for some “white guilt” I suppose, but as I stated early it’s still a net gain for poor black kids.

Maybe he does in your opinion, but that wasn’t my point.
It’s great PR for his political career and his businesses and whatever it cost him out of pocket is subsidised by the rest of us to the tune of about 40% when he itemizes his tax deductions. Net gain: Finlay.
Look, you’ve mistaken my argument. I didn’t compare the “net gain” of Finlay to poor black kids.
I compared the “net gain” of poor black kids getting free hot dogs & school supplies to the obvious….nothing.
If someone cheated you (legally or not) out of something of value and then gave you a trinket I doubt you’d look at the trinket as a net gain to you.
Before you can make that line of argument, you have to first prove that Finlay’s wealth came as a direct result of the enslavement of the specific blacks he’s giving hot dogs & school supplies to.
Mind you, that’s possible…just not probable.
If it matters to you, there’s a libertarian who is for “reparations” if the above conditions are met(generational tracking of both the enslaved and slave masters) in a court of law. (Dr. Walter Block)
In the case of outside the court of law(which this is), where the beneficiaries of said hotdogs & school supplies haven’t established that Finlay’s wealth came on their specific backs…my point remains.
I’m not sure if your argument is a straw man or an example of either/or but it is certainly fallacious.

It’s not just about reparations for blacks. Plenty of poor white lives were destroyed in defense of a system that only benefited the 1%. Federal and state taxes on inherited wealth would be a good start.
Waiting to hear what those “free markets reform to address poverty” might be. Have to wonder whether the avoidance of specifics is strategic, as in, if you got specific, then it would be debatable. Much easier to go with the broad brush idea that is to vague to argue. Kinda like “freedom” and “patriotism” and “common sense solutions”. Who can argue that? Much lower risk.

Kirkman is a fine example of what a true Conservative Republican should be. A real asset to our party. He should make a great governor one of these days.
It is well known in Columbia that Will Folks is on Finlay’s payroll. Talk is that he pays FITS between $2k and $4K a month to promote him.
I guy organizes a free school supply event for poor kids, and he takes sh*t for doing it. No wonder people avoid public service.
