EVEN WITH FULLY INFLATED BALLS …
|| By FITSNEWS || New England Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady and his fully inflated balls (footballs, people … footballs) won their fourth Super Bowl championship (and first in ten years) on Sunday. Trailing the defending world champion Seattle Seahawks 24-14 in the fourth quarter, Brady took the field with twelve minutes on the clock and was promptly sacked by Seattle linebacker Bruce Ervin.
Things looked bad …
The “Curse of Gisele” – a reference to the Patriots’ failure to win a championship since Brady started dating supermodel Gisele Bundchen – appeared to be alive and well. Bill Nye the “science guy” was mocking Brady’s inability to handle fully inflated footballs. Brady’s legions of female admirers were dealing with “heart palpitations.”
“Uh-oh,” one texted us.
And of course our founding editor – a 27-year Indianapolis Colts’ fan still reeling from his team’s latest loss to the Pats – was schadenfreuding every second of Brady’s misery.
But then Brady did what Brady does … and has done for the last decade-and-a-half: He calmly, methodically and consistently made plays. Big plays. In the clutch. On the biggest stage in sports.
On the first of two must-score drivers, Brady marched his team down the field 68 yards (76 yards if you count the sack) – completing five of seven passes including a pair of clutch third down throws to wide receiver Julian Edelman.
When the Patriots’ defense gave him the ball back with less than seven minutes left (now trailing 24-21), Brady did it again – completing eight-of-eight passes including the game-winning strike to Edelman.
Calm. Methodical. Consistent.
Of course his latest heroics – the latest installment in what is arguably the NFL’s greatest legacy of heroism – almost didn’t matter. Seattle’s offense drove the football all the way down to the Patriots one-yard-line as the clock ticked under half a minute – leaving the reigning heavyweight champions one hard-nosed play away from a second consecutive title.
But that’s when the Seahawks – employing the worst offensive play call in Super Bowl history – inexplicably attempted to throw for a touchdown rather than give the football to bruising running back Marshawn Lynch. Disaster ensued. Quarterback Russell Wilson‘s pass was intercepted by undrafted rookie free agent Malcolm Butler in the end zone with twenty seconds left – immediately shifting the storyline from the new dynasty in Seattle to the legend of Tom Brady.
And what a legend it is …
Brady ranks fifth on the NFL’s career regular season passing yardage and touchdown charts. He is the third-winningest starting quarterback in NFL history. But what distinguishes the former sixth round draft pick – and what makes him the greatest player ever to play his position (God, we hate saying that) – is his postseason prowess.
Brady has four Super Bowl wins under his belt now – tying his boyhood idol Joe Montana for the NFL record. The four quarterbacks who rank ahead of him in regular season passing yardage and touchdowns? They’ve combined for just three Super Bowl victories.
Brady also has three Super Bowl MVP awards to his credit (also tying Montana) – and he is the NFL’s all-time postseason leader in victories, passing yardage and touchdowns.
Again, we hate saying it because we detest the Patriots – and we’re sure their latest cheating scandal will cause some to (rightfully) question their success – but the bottom line is Tom Brady isn’t just the biggest “big game” quarterback in NFL history, he is the best quarterback period.
Love him, hate him … it’s just not really up for debate anymore.
