Donald Trump On Muslims: #Winning

THE “REPUBLICAN” ESTABLISHMENT? THE “REPUBLICAN” ESTABLISHMENT? NOT SO MUCH …

Brash, bombastic Donald Trump became the GOP presidential frontrunner by speaking bluntly about the dangers of illegal immigration from Mexico … and he appears poised to remain the GOP presidential frontrunner by speaking similarly about the dangers associated with immigrants from Muslim countries.

Meanwhile the “Republican” establishment – which attacked Trump relentlessly in the aftermath of his Mexican standoff – is making the same mistake it did months ago.

Two days ago, a national reporter contacted Will Folks – the founding editor of this website – and asked for his perspective on Trump’s recent call to temporarily halt all Muslim immigration to the United States.

“I think he is seizing upon something the rest of the field cannot – and frankly I think his ‘Muslim Wall’ will be every bit as popular with the GOP electorate as his Mexican Wall,” Folks told the scribe.

Well guess what …

According to new polling data released this week by Bloomberg, “almost two-thirds of likely 2016 Republican primary voters favor Donald Trump’s call to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the U.S., while more than a third say it makes them more likely to vote for him.”

Specifically, 65 percent of GOP primary voters supported Trump’s policy – compared to only 22 percent who opposed it.

The pollsters also grudgingly acknowledged that despite efforts by “conservative” media outlets to sink Trump’s candidacy over the issue (sound familiar?) – the controversy enveloping him this week isn’t hurting his campaign.

“Despite some conventional wisdom expressed in the last 48 hours, this is unlikely to hurt Trump at least in the primary campaign,” said Doug Usher of Washington, D.C.-based Purple Strategies, the group which conducted the poll.

Um … Ya think?

Memo to the GOP establishment: Trump is feeding off of this.  Again.  And once again “Republicans” are totally misreading their own voters in responding.

The most amazing thing about the Bloomberg data?  GOP primary voters still overwhelmingly embraced Trump’s proposal after they were “push-polled” on the issue – or fed biased statements such as “leaders from across the political spectrum have condemned (Trump’s) policy” or Trump’s policy would “make America less safe by alienating the allies we need to fight ISIS.”

Even after hearing these descriptors, a whopping 64 percent of the GOP electorate still supported Trump (including 52 percent who still strongly supported his proposal).

That’s unheard of …

Don’t get us wrong: We have serious constitutional concerns regarding what Trump has proposed, as well as legitimate questions about whether his plan is even feasible.  And we certainly think there are better ways of accomplishing his objective.  But as one of our letter writers recently noted, “Trump sounds like the only guy who has a practical plan for dealing with this (ISIS) crap – while the Republican establishment is going to war with him.”

Indeed …

Also as we noted in this recent piece, whatever one thinks of the national security implications of accepting certain immigrants the bottom line is America cannot afford to accept any new immigrants.

The GOP was already prepared to press the panic button over Trump’s candidacy prior to this controversy blowing up.  Now it is faced with an unpalatable choice: 1) Do nothing and watch Trump continue to pick up support. 2) Attack Trump and watch him continue to pick up support.

That’s a no-win proposition for the “Republican” establishment … and frankly, we love watching it all unravel.

if the majority of republicans want him gone, they better do it now, if they wait until the convention to pull the plug on him, a significant percentage of their voters will split off from the party and will be voting for some third party nutcase for decades.

As my respect for Trump grows, my disdain and lack of respect for sellouts like Lindsey Graham and Mick Mulvaney also increases.

Is Mick now Lindsey’s new love interest? Mick did good in getting rid of gasbag Spratt, but Mick is well past his expiration date and has begun to turn. A suitable replacement needs to be found, ASAP.

Actually, there is precedent for “the muslim wall” in the form of an existing law giving the President the means to deny immigration of groups or classes of people INto the country who are potentially harmful to our country.

I believe President Jimmy Carter may have used it to curtail the number of Iranians coming into the US.

ok lets think this out. 1 turkey is a NATO ally, do you really think they are going to set there and let us treat their citizens like second rate people and look at the populations of the rest of the nato allies, they are going to fall in behind turkey and we can pretty much kiss our nato alliences goodby. 2 Jordan has been about as good a friend as we have ever had in the middle east, kiss them goodby. 3 sanctions on our exports and especially oil. Putin is gonna love that, he really needs to sell more oil and look how he will be able to advance russian interest in muslim countries all over the world. you want to know what iran has been feeling for the last couple of decades, let trump try put up the muslim wall as bad as congress is, they would never let that nut do that much harm to our country. in other words he is never going to do it.

I think many people are desperate for some real leadership outside of the current DC bunch. Is he serious? Can’t tell. Is Donald perfect? Far from it, but if he is upsetting our establishment and shining a light on what is wrong I’m all for it. As you can see from reading these critical posts no one is willing to run their own candidate through the same gauntlet. That is all I need to know to know somebody is full of it.

stumpknocker December 9, 2015 at 5:48 pm

Not all Muslims are in that diagram but all that are in it are Muslims. Get the distinction? How do you propose to run the DHS? I think a reasonable person can agree the Obama Administration is failing on all fronts. I’m asking for logical sense not Party politics.

Tom December 9, 2015 at 6:30 pm

You make it party politics when you start off saying Obama has failed on all fronts. So how can we have a discussion that is not party politics.

Tazmaniac December 9, 2015 at 6:34 pm

I can’t help the opposite of succeeding in foreign policy is failed in the English Language. How about not been very effective?

Tom December 9, 2015 at 7:03 pm

Look, Obama has been very effective in repairing our reputation among our allies, which was destroyed by Bush. I know you right wingers don’t believe that, but if you would talk to people in Europe you would know they hated Bush and they hated America run by Bush. We can get them to do far more now than we could have under Bush. Further we have had fewer Terrorists attacks under Obama than under Bush or Clinton. Finally we have killed more terrorist leaders under Obama than under Bush. But that aside we can agree Obama has not contained ISIS.
That said, you will empower ISIS and cause their ranks to grow if you isolate moderate Muslims and mistreat moderate Muslims. You will be confirming what they are saying. Which is that America is a Christian Nation at war with all Muslims.
To me the way to resolve this issue, and we are a long way from doing it, is to stop importing Middle Eastern Oil. We need to get our corporations out of the Middle East. We need to walk away from that part of the world. When we no longer need them and are no longer involved in the operation of their countries. When our Corporation stop bribing their officials and playing money politics. We will be close. But that will still leave Israel; and I don’t have a clue how we will ever resolve that; as long American Christians believe we are on the side of the Anti-Christ unless we defend Israel against Muslims.

Stickler Vertango December 9, 2015 at 9:29 pm

Muslims can’t be vetted.
The values expressed in their Koran are incompatible with our
constitutional republic/Judeao-Christian values. They will never assimilate and will likely go
jihad on us.

Stickler VerPogo December 10, 2015 at 9:02 am

Between Success and Failure December 10, 2015 at 8:59 am

How about the talks with other countries about acting against ISIS? Obama has already spoken with Putin many times on this. We are coordinating efforts with other countries, which is how it should be done. We don’t need boots on the ground, and if we did, we don’t need OUR boots on the ground. We already tried that with Iraq and Afghanistan once and have quite the bill and loss of American lives to show for it.

Stymie Yelodog December 9, 2015 at 4:58 pm

Trump is not calling for vaporizing anyone

Somebody may want to take a look at Japan. They don’t seem to have terrorism, but then they don’t really let Muslims in either. The Japanese view Islam as a dangerous religion and publicly discourage it. You cannot pray in groups in public or you face stiff fines. And since they beheaded the two Japanese guys a few months ago, Japan has taken an even harsher approach towards Muslims.

Hopefully enough thinking people will do just that, in the upcoming election. As for now Kasich, Bush, Graham and the other PC Republicans can go to hell!

CorruptionInColumbia December 9, 2015 at 7:33 pm

Cali has “assault weapon” and magazine bans and has had them for years. As I understand it, if you have an AR or AK with the requsite 10rd or less magazine, you aldo have to navigate a stupid “bullet button” which requires using the point of a bullet or like object begore you can remove the magazine.

Geeze, I am grateful that these laws were in place or a lot of people might have been killed and injured in San Bernadino…, OH WAIT!

Why the coverup? December 9, 2015 at 7:59 pm

Yeah, let’s disarm the American citizen. Then the Jihadist can kill like shooting fish in a barrel. The guns used in California should have never fallen into the Muslim hands! The one used in the attempted killing, by the Muslim in Texas, was illegal everywhere and the one Used to kill Military Recruiters in Tennessee was also illegal everywhere! The report of where the came from (smuggled) by the Muslims was squashed! Why? They were smuggled across our borders? In a Diplomatic package? What was their origin and why not reported? Why was their origin covered up? Maybe it did not firt the Administration anti gun agenda? After aall they have been cooking the books on the Economy, successes against ISIS in the Middle East (a la Viet Nam thanks to LBJ). Same old lies and cover ups to the American people!

I wasn’t around for the shooting in California though. I might have easy access to guns, but so do potential shooters.

CorruptionInColumbia December 10, 2015 at 9:23 am

No, actually in CA, you don’t. Carry permits have become increasingly difficult for the average citizen in CA to obtain. CA did away eith their (pretty much pointless) open carry law which allowed citizens to open carry but required that their gun be unloaded.

Even if there might have been armed citizens around, this shooting, as with almost all such incidents, occurred in a Gun Free Zone. Government buildings in almost all areas that allow some form of citizen carry, are designated Gun Free Zones. As with all similar cases before, we see how well the GFZ designation prevented tragedy and protected citizens.

Bottom Line: As usual, you are totally wrong, again.

Draw Muhammad and get stabbed (or shot, dependent upon what town you’re in).

Stickler Vertango December 9, 2015 at 9:42 pm

First, we are at war with ISIS. They have a self proclaimed Caliphate the size of Indiana and wanting to expand. Mr. Trump is thinking rightly as history and common sense will show. During WWII should Roosevelt have let #$%$anese, German and Italians, enter the country? Of course not. Why are we allowing it now? The latest attack would NOT have happened had we been following the Trump prescription. Good Muslim-Bad Muslim? Good #$%$ or bad

Declaration of War December 10, 2015 at 8:50 am

We were actually at war with those countries, that’s why it was called a world war. We are not at war with Islam, or even at war with a significant Islamic state. We are fighting a bunch of cults in the desert we had a hand in creating in the first place. Why punish hundreds of millions over the actions of a few thousand? What does a Muslim in Algeria have to do with ISIS?

“Truman vaporized two Japanese cities faced with Japan’s declaration of a bloody “house to house” death to the last man standing”

From memory, in a book about General Joseph “Vinegar Joe” Stillwell, there is an exchange between Stillwell and Chinese Warlords —-

When the Japanese were pushing the Chinese back further and further but refused to call it retreating, Stillwell asked what were the Warlords going to do when they could go no further, and a Warlord answered something like, “We will fight to the last coolie, and then we must surrender.”

The time has come to return to the strategy of President Truman and face reality. If we really want to destroy ISIS and set an example for other radical Muslims and the Putins of the world to fear us and leave us in peace, we must use the tools that can do this. Put simply, we should employ tactical nuclear weapons to wipe out the enemy. We cannot worry that Islamic civilians will be killed in the process. In the end this strategy, as was true of the Japanese in World War II, saves not just American but Muslim lives as well.

I think most Republicans understands that Trump wants to bring this issue up for debate. There will never be a permanent ban on Muslims, but the vetting process for Muslims coming into this country should be strengthened
It has already been brought to light that the Muslim woman involved in the San Bernardino shooting was not completely vetted. I think that is what most Americans want, just some effort into vetting the people coming into this country from Muslim countries.
Trump has put the issue on the table and it must be debated and some arrangements made to do a better job of vetting these people.

Reply
Stickler Vertango December 9, 2015 at 9:21 pm

If Trump had not entered the race and been brazen enough to say what a lot of America thinks, the news media and the other candidates would not be talking about this.

I don’t know, yet, if I will vote for Trump, but I definitely do thank him for controlling the topics and forcing others to follow suit.

“I don’t know, yet, if I will vote for Trump..”
That’s the way I feel, and when you speak of bringing the issue up for debate, people go non-linear and accuse you of banning or restricting all Muslim Immigration, forever. That is not he said and not what I support. I support having a debate on the issue and find out how we can better screen these people, because there is a serious problem with terrorism among that population.

If you actually paid attention, you would have seen a few interviews since with Trump where he specifically states that military service members would be excluded. As for the number of Muslims, it is self-reporting based on what would constitute a proper burial in the case of death, not necessarily the religion they actively practice. Regardless, absolutely no one is turning down Muslims who want to fight for us against extremists in their own religion that pose a threat to our way of life.

They really have NO business coming here other than to cause mischief and pervert our way of living.” What a slap in the face to Muslim servicemen & women.

Stickler Vertango December 10, 2015 at 9:47 am

Once again Donald Trump is correct and his detractors are wrong. For one example Jimmy Carter banned Iranians from entering this country and further deported thousands of Iranian who were students. During the Iranian hostage crisis. No one ever said a word. Maybe because he is/was a democrat. Furthermore, the Immigration and Nationality Act passed June 27, 1952 revised the laws relating to immigration, naturalization, and nationality for the United States. That law remains in effect today. Among the many issues it covers, one in particular, found in Chapter 2 Section 212, is the prohibition of entry to the US if the Alien belongs to an organization seeking to overthrow the government of the United States by “force, violence, or other unconstitutional means.” This, by its very definition, rules out Islamic immigration to the United States, but this law is being ignored by the White House and evidently by congress. Right along with it it seems, when it comes to Donald Trump’s statement, the investigative press.

mamatiger92 December 10, 2015 at 9:49 am

Apples & oranges. He banned Iranians, not an entire faith, goober.
Again I ask if you are willing to tell the 5,000 Muslims in the US military that they have no values and are here merely to cause mischief while they dodge bullets for your pathetic ass?

Rocky Verdad December 10, 2015 at 9:54 am

James P. December 10, 2015 at 9:51 am

mamatiger92 December 10, 2015 at 9:52 am

Huh? It absolutely applies to them as Muslims. Trump isn’t talking about weeding out. He’s calling for a full out ban.

James P. December 10, 2015 at 9:56 am

Yes, until they can be properly vetted. Again, these service members are already citizens and residents of this country, how the hell does an immigration ban apply to them?

I don’t agree with everything ThreePalms said. You are correct that there is no difference between the Rainbow coalition, Occupy Wall Street, the Tea Party, and the Christian Coalition other than political ideology. They were all originally get out the vote efforts. The Tea Party just got out of Republican Party control and now has a life of its own.

But I think the Southern Strategy is not the same. It was reprehensible.

Stickler Vertango December 10, 2015 at 10:20 am

Iran?

Shia Islam is the official religion and all laws must be consistent with the official interpretation of Sharia law. According to the Iranian state, only Armenians and Assyrians can be Christian. Ethnic Persians are by definition Muslim, and ethnic Persian Christians are considered apostates. This makes almost all Christian activity illegal, especially when it occurs in Persian languages – from evangelism to Bible training, to publishing Scripture and Christian books or preaching in Farsi. In 2014, at least 75 Christians were arrested. More Christians were sentenced to prison and pressure on those detained increased, including physical and mental abuse.

https://www.opendoorsusa.org/christian-persecution/world-watch-list/iran/

Rocky Verdad December 10, 2015 at 10:42 am

The main Christian churches are:
Armenian Apostolic Church of Iran (between 110,000, 250,000, and 300,000 adherents)
Assyrian Church of the East of Iran (about 11,000 – 20,000 adherents)
Chaldean Catholic Church of Iran (about 7,000 Assyrian adherents)
Persian Apostolic Church of the East
Roman Catholic Church of Iran (about 21,380 adherents)
various other denominations, some examples are:
Presbyterian, including the Assyrian Evangelical Church
Pentecostal, including the Assyrian Pentecostal Church
Jama’at-e Rabbani (the Iranian Assemblies of God churches)
and the Anglican Diocese of Iran.

Rocky Verdad December 10, 2015 at 10:44 am

The government guarantees the recognized Christian minorities a number of rights (production and sale of non-halal foods), representation in parliament, special family law etc

Christianity is reportedly the fastest growing religion in Iran with an average annual rate of 5.2%, and it remains the second-largest non-Muslim minority religion in the country.

Stickler Vertango December 10, 2015 at 10:46 am

Persecution of Christians in Iran is as bad as it was three years ago, in spite of the pre-election promises of the president, according to a new report.

Christians continue to be arbitrarily arrested and interrogated because of their faith. Some face “severe physical and psychological torture” during detention, and simple prayer or Bible study meetings are regarded as political activities that threaten the national security of Iran, the report says.

Churches can be closed down if they use the national language, Farsi, and Christians are regularly given long prison sentences and beatings. The worst punishments are reserved for those who convert to Christianity from Islam, when they are caught gathering in their informal house churches, and for their faith.
