WHERE’S THAT “PALMETTO PRIDE?”

South Carolina was one of the thirteen colonies to declare its independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1776 … but the intervening two-and-a-half centuries haven’t exactly seen the Palmetto State “un-yoke” itself.

According to data collected from 2004 to 2013 by The Pew Center, South Carolina ranks eighth nationally in terms of the percentage of its economy that’s comprised of federal spending.

Take a look …

federal spending GDP

(Graph via)

There’s another chart worth considering, though …

According to recent calculations by Ryan McMaken of The Mises Institute, South Carolina ranks fourth among the states in terms of the amount of money it receives from Washington, D.C. per dollar in taxes paid.

For every $1.00 the Palmetto State sends to the federal government, it gets a little more than $3.00 back (more than twice the national average of $1.20).

Here’s that graph …

dollar

(Graph: Via)

How’s all that federal money working out for us?  Well, we’re dirt poor, our workforce is among the nation’s smallest, our schools are the nation’s worst and more than half of our live births are covered by Medicaid.

“It’s a great day in South Carolina,” right?

While the low-intellect temptation would be to view getting $3.00 back for every $1.00 we send to Washington, D.C. as a “good deal,” there are strings attached to that money.  And a stigma.

Seriously … isn’t the goal to be a state with high income levels that doesn’t need handouts?  Not a state where one out of five residents is on food stamps?

No. The goal is to take the money from the pyramid base, and transfer it to the top, while passing laws to insure that once transferred, it can’t make its way down again.

Stereotyping the victims as not willing to work helps to ensure that the lack of jobs doesn’t get confused with inability to pay the rent.

After all, EVERYONE can’t be a billionaire!

It didn’t use to be like that in China 40 years ago. Back then practically everyone was dirt poor and there were no billionaires. Now they China has over 200 billionaires and the people are much much. ….. Oh, wait….

You need to do your research. Compare job growth in Republican controlled states to Democratically controlled states.

Flip March 7, 2016 at 10:51 am

I was drunk when I posted that.Sorry.You’re right.

Flip March 7, 2016 at 12:05 pm

Job growth is one factor of many. If you run the state budget into the ground who cares if you scraped together a few jobs? A few jobs helps a few people, an across the board tax increase or budget cut affects everyone. By those standards Republicans do horrible and in many states.

+10 for a Mises reference

The Left sees the problem of poverty as possibly being mitigated via the use of government transfer payments from the wealthy(and not so wealthy- middle class for example).

They ignore that poverty has been creeping up since LBJ and that after 50 years of policy involving huge government wealth transfer(theft) the problem hasn’t gone away, but actually become worse- with the creation of generational welfare classes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0Yp1jUtcX8

This fact, coupled with the fact that the wealthy class controls government(and simply makes the wealth transfer from the middle class heavier via tax loopholes, etc.), the very government that they hope to use to effect MORE wealth transfer- seems to bounce right off their skulls.

We have been complaining about loopholes and cuts going to the wealthy for about 40 years now. Those come especially during periods of Republican control, although Clinton was complicit in it to a certain degree and Obama to a much greater degree.

Unfortunately the right has been fooled into thinking these loopholes and cuts for the wealthy somehow help them. They don’t, it just concentrates more wealth at the top and the national debt will eventually kill every social program, and the rich won’t even bat an eye when it happens.

Reply
TroubleBaby March 7, 2016 at 8:57 am

We see that in a two-party split, 60-80% of welfare recipients are Democrats, while full time Workers are evenly divided between parties.

You have similar results in this recent NPR-Poll. Among the Long Term Unemployed, 72% of the two-party support goes to Democrats.

It appears that once more common sense is right and the impression left by the New York Times wrong. Indeed, people who live off the government disproportionally support Democrats.

Welfare bums like me learned how to cheat the system long ago.

Milo Moroni owned a small Italian restaurant frequented by local politicians. Because he was popular with his neighbors, Milo decided to run for a minor local office.
Jim Johnson, the local political boss, acted as his mentor. Milo was elected by a landslide. Several years later, there was an opening for the city council. Johnson pulled strings and Milo was elected handily.

Milo moved on to become mayor, a congressman, and finally a senator. Sitting with Johnson the morning after the election that elevated him to the high office of senator,
Milo was not as happy as he could have been.

Johnson asked, “Hey, you’re a senator now. That’s a big office. What else could

you want?”

Milo said, “I was wondering if you could do one more favor for me. Could you help me become a citizen?”

What would be interesting is to see how that breaks out. For example, Fort Jackson and the air force base to the east, and what’s left of the Navy in Chucktown, and Parris Island, probably are a lot of that. And not sure how much that spills over to the local economy (i.e. jarhead and ruck humper recruits probably don’t get a lot of leave time to spend money locally). Also we have the Savannah River Deer Glowing factory, and that probably has some impact – but it’s ain’t like Barnwell is some shiny clean metropolis. There’s the federal monies for projects at USC and Clemson, I guess. The fed money for school is spread out pretty thin, depending on the poverty of the district. My guess is there’s a good bit in Medicaid block grant.

Point is, probably out each $3 – only about $1.20 is in programs for poverty etc, and the remainder is in the three big bases, and what’s left in Chucktown (which I think is still a major nuke school).
