FIELD WINNOWED TO FIVE …

|| By FITSNEWS || The race for mayor of Charleston, S.C. is short a candidate …

Former city councilman Paul Tinkler announced he was ending his bid to lead the Holy City, citing his inability to “give 100 percent to the race during the remaining two months.”

“I cannot fully express how much I have enjoyed the last year on the campaign trail, meeting Charlestonians and discussing the issues that affect us all,” Tinkler said in a letter to Charleston residents.  “However, campaigning and maintaining a law practice have become increasingly more difficult to balance.  Unexpected and significant professional obligations have taken my attention from the campaign and vice versa.”

Tinkler’s exit from the race leaves five candidates in the running – most notably fifth-term S.C. Rep. Leon Stavrinakis, the frontrunner.

Also running?  Local businessman John Tecklenburg, nonprofit community leader Ginny Deerin, city councilman William Dudley Gregorie and community leader Maurice Washington.

The five candidates are vying to replace longtime Charleston mayor Joe Riley, who is stepping down this year after four decades on the job.

““However, campaigning and maintaining a law practice have become increasingly more difficult to balance. Unexpected and significant professional obligations have taken my attention from the campaign and vice versa.”

In other words, he must be productive…and getting elected so he can be unproductive doesn’t look like a possibility.
