An arrest warrant has been issued for a former “assistant technology administrator” at South Carolina’s worst-performing government-run school district, The Jasper (S.C.) Sun is reporting.

Forty-year-old Gwenetta A. Harris – who lives in Georgia but (until recently) worked for the Jasper County school district – has been accused of embezzling more than $10,000 from taxpayers.

What did she do? According to investigators, Harris submitted school purchase orders for “iPads, iPods and accessories” which were never used by the district.

Harris was fired on October 23 – more than three months after the alleged thieving began.

Sources on the ground tell FITS the extent of the theft is much larger than what has thus far been publicized.

“At least $25,000 in iPads and other computer equipment is M.I.A., unaccounted for and cannot be located,” one source said.

Other district officials may be involved in the plot, too.

Sadly, we’re also told stories like Harris’ are “par for the course” in this notoriously corrupt district – which boasts the lowest test scores of any government-run district in the state.

We’re sure the local State Senator Clementa Pinckney will get right on that … (not).

I don’t get the “government-run” issue here. I guarantee you the Jasper county Wal-Mart has had more stuff stolen by its employees than the Jasper County school district.

Jackie,

It is Nov 22. Only 8 more days in the month before Sic Willie’s mortgage is due. He needs that Howie Rich check. Howie has mandated that Sic Willie use “government-run” on any articles about public school a gazillion times a month and Sic Willie hasn’t met this month’s quota yet.

JC, I don’t get your logic here. Imagining another crime at Wal-Mart to compare what this asshat actually did at the school system somehow mitigates her damage?
I am sure there are thieves in just about every sizable private and public organization in South Carolina, just catch and prosecute them when they are exposed.

Jackie Chiles November 22, 2013 at 12:12 pm

That’s my point. Pointing out that it was at a “government run” school was a cheap swipe at “government run” institutions, as if such theft only occurs due to the incompetence of government.

Reply
Kel Champlin November 24, 2013 at 12:42 am

Nope – just the incompetence of the Jasper County School District. Sorry. “Government Run” and “Jasper County” are two entirely different entities. My teenager attends the public high school here – and is asking to be home schooled. There is a reason for the reports on this District, Mr. Chiles. Do your research.

“‘Government Run’ and ‘Jasper County’ are two entirely different entities.”

I honestly have no idea what you mean by this. Are you trying to say that Jasper County isn’t the government?

D November 22, 2013 at 2:15 pm

You are extemely stupid. Wal-Mart is a private business, Jasper school district is funded by tax money from citizens and funds from the state and federal government. dah!

Uhhhh…ok? When a car accident occurs on a public road, do we start off news stories with “CAR ACCIDENT ON GOVERNMENT-RUN ROAD?” Of course we don’t. Because whether the road is government run or not has nothing to do with the story itself. It’s just a ploy to get you mad at the government for something that happens everywhere.

Reply
MashPotato November 22, 2013 at 6:56 pm

Yes, it does. Government roads are like ugly children. We have no idea how terrible they are because they’re the only ones we have.

Roundabouts are safer and more efficient than intersections. But traffic lights are great moneymakers for the state, so roundabouts aren’t even considered an option.

I’m not saying every intersection should be replaced with a roundabout. I’m just saying that if roads were paid for voluntarily by the people who need them, they’ll be cheaper, safer, and will better serve those who use them. A road-building company has more at stake if accidents happen frequently on their roads.

But you’re going to pay your traffic ticket and buy new cars with thirty airbags, because the state provides everything to us, and keeps us safe from ourselves.

Where do you buy that stuff you smoke? Ever heard of ROAD TAX?

MashPotato November 22, 2013 at 7:08 pm

What happens if you don’t pay the road tax?

CNSYD November 22, 2013 at 9:02 pm

How do you plan on buying gas for your vehicle without paying it?

MashPotato November 23, 2013 at 2:19 pm

That’s the whole point of this. Roads are paid for through mandatory taxes instead of being crowdfunded voluntarily. The first makes a few people in charge of building roads, but everyone has to pay for everyone else’s roads. The second allows more people to participate in the process, and people pay for and maintain the roads they use the most.

They only get away with the gas tax because people have no idea how much it is. They don’t post it at the gas station. People just assume oil companies make all the profits. On average, oil companies make 7-10 cents per gallon, but the federal gas tax is 19.5 cents per gallon, and between 10-35 cents depending on the state.

Why do you insist that the only way it’s been tried is the only way possible? Do you not like options? Do you not want cheaper, safer, more efficient roads?

TontoBubbaGoldstein November 24, 2013 at 9:29 am

How do you plan on buying gas for your vehicle without paying it [Gasoline tax]?

TBG was thinking of becoming a farmer.

“Roundabouts are safer and more efficient than intersections. But traffic lights are great moneymakers for the state, so roundabouts aren’t even considered an option.”

You have no clue what you’re talking about. Roundabouts are popping up all over the place. Right now, the feds are only offering funding for roundabouts in certain locations across the state.

Slartibartfast November 23, 2013 at 4:42 pm

You’re both right. The only thing that separates you two are that these ideas should be voluntary. Why are you arguing?

Thomas November 24, 2013 at 11:56 pm

Speaking of private road building contractors, our once locally owned Sloan Construction, the guys who repave our roads, are now owned by a French government subsidized conglomerate. Our tax dollars are going to France.

Slartibartfast November 23, 2013 at 4:40 pm

Indeed. South Carolina used to have the best highways in the States. Then the Feds decided to impose the War on Poverty and we haven’t been able to afford either, since. Toll roads would solve the problem – you’re right – but some jackass would say that the poor wouldn’t be able to ride on the roads, or that free roads are a civil right, so that’ll never be allowed.

Kel Champlin November 24, 2013 at 12:39 am

No… Actually, the story is “The SC Highway Patrol…” instead of “the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office….” Unfortunately, Mr. Chiles, until you have actually LOOKED at the Jasper County School District, and the associated Jasper County Council, you have NO information about this area. Time for some research!!!!!

Maybe it is just the time of day but it seems to me that every time stories are published about hundreds of thousands up to millions of tax dollars walking out the back door they are followed up with stories of someone being busted for walking away with a few thousand bucks

Logic tells me it should be easier to stomp the shit out of a big fat ass cockroach loaded down on all eight knees with booty than geting off a good blow to the head of a small ass cockroach with little more than the shirt on their back

Big cockroaches apparently are much harder to catch in this part of the state! SLED has been “investigating” this school district for 7 plus years with no resolution.

Just glad somebody is doing something.

This ‘government-run school’ talking point crap is getting old.
Especially since what you support is government supported via tax credit/voucher crony capitalism schools.
You people are really good at stirring up your moronic base and, as more and more studies surface showing charters and private schools are not one bit better than the public schools, you’re getting just a trifle desperate.

Cliff November 23, 2013 at 8:02 am

Nitrat,
Clearly you hate conservatives. Tea Party people. People that disagree with you. People that don’t believe is free government spending.
Is there anyone you don’t hate?

Reply
nitrat November 23, 2013 at 5:16 pm

I don’t hate people who disagree with me. But, by God, I hate fascists, particularly the kind who call themselves good free market Christians.

From Sinclair Lewis 1935 – 1935 – novel ‘It Can’t Happen Here’: “But he saw too that in America the struggle was befogged by the fact that the worst Fascists were they who disowned the word ‘Fascism’ and preached enslavement to Capitalism under the style of Constitutional and Traditional Native American Liberty.”
Does that old quote not describe the TEAvangelicals?
Cliff, since I learned that Karl Rove’s favorite tactic is having a politician attack his opponent for what he is doing himself, I recognize that pretty much anytime you people accuse someone of something, it’s because you are describing yourself. Therefore, it’s likely you are the one who can’t deal with anyone disagreeing with you and are consumed with hate and the anger that usually goes along with it.

Kel Champlin November 24, 2013 at 12:53 am

Grins… I’m not a Christian… Not a “Fascist”, not a “Teavangelical”. I’m a Pagan mother of a 15 year old boy in the local public school district.
AND a former reporter.
Dude. Wake the hell up. Not everything is about Democrat and Republican. Start researching what is actually happening on a basic political level in this county, and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
If you don’t feel the need to do research? Shut the hell up about this subject.
