Former S.C. Rep. John Graham Altman is dead, one of his daughters is confirming to a local media outlet.

The 79-year-old – a former spokesman to Democratic Gov. Fritz Hollings – served five terms as a “Republican” in the S.C. House of Representatives from 1997-2007.

FITS reported on Altman’s hospitalization last month – including allegations that his wife, S.C. Federation of Republican Women (SCFRW) chairwoman Charm Altman, had mistreated him.

“He had been laying on the couch since last November,” one source told us at the time.

Ouch …

We obviously had very little in common with Altman ideologically. He was a die-hard “Republican in Name Only” – an especially cantankerous and irascible one at that – one of many who repeatedly put the interests of the Columbia, S.C. political establishment ahead of the interests of the people he was supposed to be representing.

Having said that we don’t wish mistreatment (or neglect) on anyone …

I cannot speak with regard to Mr Altman as I really know nothing more about him than what I read in this article.

That said, the idea of quite a few of these thieving, treasonous, political scum who do everything in their power to financially cripple the rest of us while lining their own pockets, laying in their own urine, feces, and drool, for months at a time does bring a smile to my face. That would be poetic justice.

You say it like it’s a bad thing.

Often disagreed with JGA … but always knew where he stood. He was also good for some ‘quotable quotes’ and was not adverse to “stirring the pot”.

RIP, John Graham.

If JGA was a RINO, there is no such thing in Folk’s eyes as a Republican who isn’t a RINO. RIP John Graham.

Made the comment below before JGA died and initially thought that fitsnews called him a RINO in its own error. Now that it is obvious that fitsnews intentionally called JGA a RINO I must respectfully disagree. Furthermore, I believe that most fitnews supporters would consider John Graham Altman a former Democrat that became a true Conservative Republican within the meanings of those words after 1972. The comment was made in response to the fitnews article https://www.fitsnews.com/2013/09/23/more-charleston-political-drama/ on October 31:

There are some major errors in the article above about John Graham Altman. Since those errors could possibly fuel detractors of FITSNEWS, it may want to consider reviewing the article and correcting errors.
First, the article refers to John Graham Altman as a “RINO” (Republican in Name Only). Mr. Altman was NOT a liberal or moderate who used the Republican label in name only because it was convenient or helped him to get elected.Although Mr. Altman, like many others, was initially politically active as a Democrat, he did not become a Republican in name only and still hold on to the principals of the other party. ANY person that knows John Graham Altman can vouch that he is a true conservative and that, like many other Southern Democrats who held conservative beliefs, he joined the Republican party because he felt that party most closely supported his views, beliefs and principals. The purpose of this comment is not to endorse any political party nor any ideology, whether it be Republican, Democrat, Conservative, Moderate or Liberal. Rather, the purpose is to point out that the article refers to John Graham Altman as a RINO-Republican and that description is inaccurate. The most important issue in any article should be truth. The truth is that John Graham Altman is a Conservative Republican.

Second, the article refers to “sources” that attack John Graham Altman’s wife, Charm, for allegedly treating him poorly. Again, since the most important issue in any article should be truth or pursuit of truth, it should be known that Charm Altman worked very hard to help her husband throughout the decline in his health and that some people decide for themselves that they do not want further help from others, including doctors and the government. Sometimes this can be especially true for people who have certain views.

Again, the purpose of this comment is to relay truth regarding this matter and not to endorse any political party nor any ideology. The truth is that the article contains some inaccuracies and some of the comments left for this article are much worse. Another truth is that no matter what opinion any person may have of John Graham Altman or whether he was right or wrong as to any issue, he NEVER personally profited from public office nor from his politics.
