GOOD TO KNOW THAT “HIGHER ED BUBBLE” IS WORTH IT …

By FITSNEWS  ||  Government-run schools in the United States love to indoctrinate America’s youth on the dangers of “global warming,” the benevolence of big government and the unmitigated evil of white people (and capitalism) … but how are they doing when it comes to actually educating them?

Not very well …

This week we were forwarded a video filmed recently on the campus of Texas Tech University that should make you weep for the future of the country … assuming you weren’t doing so already.  In the clip, students at the Lubbock, Texas school were interviewed and asked several basic questions – including “Who won the Civil War?”  “Who is the vice president?” and “Who did we gain our independence from?”

How’d the students fare?  Not well …

Of course when the questions turned to popular culture (“What show is Snooki on?” and “Who is Brad Pitt married to?”), the students immediately knew the answers.

So yeah … this is what that massive inflation of America’s student loan bubble is going for!

(Click to play)

(Vid: Via)

Yikes!

Oh well at least there are historical markers out there to educate these young minds … errrr, hmmmm.  Maybe not so much.

UPDATE: Of interest, here’s the student who filmed the video responding to her critics.

This is like Jay Walking back when Jay Leno was on. They find a bunch of people. Those who answered correctly don’t get shown. The handful that give wrong answers are ridiculed on TV/Youtube. Yes, there are a lot of stupid people.

My religion is science and math. I’m open minded about Global Warming… (agnostic about it.) Just because it gets cold like it’s supposed to in winter, people are all “See, Global Warming is BS.”.. When it get’s hot you get the opposite effect.

I don’t gather credible science from government officials, but rather scientists who don’t proselytize about politics and religion.

I’ll bet I could determine just by looking who knew more popular culture than who rules their lives.

Jimmy Kimmel still does a similar bit called “lie witness news”, where a correspondent asks someone about something completely fictional or even backwards to see what they say.

Similar but funnier.

I dunno…I run across these kids in one of my regular gigs, and the derp runs pretty deep. I’ve also used quizzes like this to break the ice and break large groups into smaller groups on consulting gigs, but I stopped because the level of stupidity in the young execs was so bad that I usually just ended up embarrassing the the few who were self-aware enough to know they were morons. I rationalize it away by thinking that maybe it’s always been true that about 75% of the population is fairly stupid, it’s just more obvious now due to the web, social media, etc.

I agree with you,to a point. I’ve worked with teens and adults since the 70’s,and have seen, first hand;most people don’t read books, anymore. The majority of college graduates stop reading after they get their degree, and there’s a decline in English Departments//https://theamericanscholar.org/the-decline-of-the-english-department/#.VI3IoyvF_94

Great article! The line that summed it for me was, “Studying English taught us how to write and think better, and to make
articulate many of the inchoate impulses and confusions of our post-adolescent minds.”

STEM and biz degrees are great (and we obviously need both types); I just wish *all* degrees still pounded the basics in for at least the first two years- English lit, basic US and world history / Western Civ, logic / philosophy, etc. I think those days are gone, unfortunately, which will create a class of academic elites on the university side and graduates who can read a spreadsheet but have no real understanding of the world in which the business operates.

The conservation crowd no longer uses the term “global warming.” Scientific data shows that our climate has actually cooled slightly in recent years. Oops! That is why they now use the term “climate change.” They have no idea what changes might occur but they are hoping some sort of change occurs so they don’t look stupid again.

“Strange that would somehow infer that I was endorsing the practice of marrying a woman who was simply looking for a gravy train (or at least a particular lifestyle”
Well, when someone posts something and you gush “awesome” to them that generally means you are in agreement – well, maybe not in your alternate universe.
Or maybe you thought that the posting name E Norma Scok was “awesome” – I certainly would not find that surprising either.

I thought you folks (meaning perpetually angry feminist types) think gay is cool, no? Gay folks of any stripe don’t bother me a whit, as long as they don’t bother me. Mike at the Beach December 16, 2014 at 3:05 pm

Easy killa! Not the context I was in. I’m fairly certain gay dudes aren’t checking out my ass…which likewise doesn’t bother me. I meant “don’t bother me” in the general small-L libertarian kinda way. I would say the same thing about any other subculture I don’t want any part of, not just the LGBT community (potheads, people who wear their pants down around their asses, drunks, etc.)…more like a “to each their own” thing.

Why, do these pants make my butt look big? ;-)

9" December 16, 2014 at 7:12 pm

I get you,but I’ve had acquaintances tell me that, when I admit I’m gay.I don’t make anyone’s gaydar go off.’Straight-acting’ gays sometimes have it worse than the effeminate ones, and I get along better w/straight men and women due to mutual interests…

‘I would say the same thing about any other subculture I don’t want any part of, not just the LGBT community’

I’m not part of any subculture.I’m a homosapien, first and foremost.Sorry,I overestimated your intelligence. There’s so much more to a person than their sexuality.

Mike at the Beach December 16, 2014 at 8:02 pm

Lighten up, amigo. We’re *all* in subcultures, whether we define them ourselves or not. I’m sorry if SOC 101 gets on your nerves, but that’s simply not some kind of judgmental statement. Like most people, I know a few homosexuals, and they’re actually in different subcultures. I know two pretty well- one works in the gay nightclub scene, is what most would call a bit flamboyant, and he genuinely embraces all of the parts of that scene; while the other lives a very mainstream life, works as a respected professional (just retired, actually), has been married to the same guy for 25 years, and describes himself as “merely gay” (which I think is pretty clever, and jibes with what you wrote). There’s actually a lot of discussion in sociology circles these days as to when my “merely gay” bud’s lifestyle will no longer be considered a subculture by SOC standards, but that’s just way too semantic and boring for this venue. My friends in the sociology world get way into the weeds on this stuff, down to how people dress, hobbies, etc. Of course we’re all people first, but sociology classifies (or tries to classify) just about any group behavior one could imagine. I’m not unintelligent just because I have a SOC minor, I just don’t think we’re in the same conversation.

My mother, (many years past her schooling) was looking through my sister’s history book from her class at Spring Valley High School. I am the oldest of the brood and my sister was the youngest by 15 years. My mother was discussing with me how small the coverage was about the Civil War/War of Northern Aggression compared to her school days in North Alabama.

I reminded her that her grandfather and father had left Atlanta immediately after that war ended and that all of her knowledge came from family members who lived during that time. Too many world events had occurred since then.

Americans are stupid. But it is not simply not knowing arcane or even popular-culture “facts” that is important, it is inability to think rationally, to acquire, assess, and process information in a rational manner. Not a few persons holding difficult-to-obtain degrees fail in this manner too. Organizations and institutions are rife with them. Confirmation bias holds sway instead.
