Judge Sets Hearing In SC Electronic Monitoring Case

A South Carolina circuit court judge will hear motions related to a controversial electronic monitoring program next month, sources familiar with the case tell FITSNews.

Judge Clifton Newman will convene an initial procedural hearing on the matter at 10:00 a.m. EDT on Thursday, May 12.

As this website reported earlier this week, a privatized electronic monitoring system for alleged offenders released on bond has raised a multitude of constitutional issues.  We addressed those issues in depth in our recent coverage, but we’re also informed that the program – which is used in Richland County, S.C. by fifth circuit solicitor Dan Johnson – is drawing fiscal scrutiny related to “procurement and budget irregularities.”
