RECALLING VETERAN SOUTH CAROLINA CONSULTANT’S EVOLVING VIEWS ON CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER …

We chose to address Martin Luther King, Jr. day this year by examining the failed record of U.S. president Barack Obama when it comes to realizing King’s “dream.”

But while we reject those who attempt to implement King’s dream via government-imposed outcomes (which has never worked and will never work), we’ve never opposed King’s dream per se.  In fact we’ve written frequently in support of its stated goal of expanded individual liberty and economic prosperity.

“There is simply no disputing the necessity – and moral correctness – of the movement King led in the 1960s,” we wrote last year.

Obviously others hold different views …

In his writings for Southern Partisan, veteran South Carolina neo-Confederate consultant Richard Quinn Sr. wrote that King’s holiday “should have been rejected because its purpose is vitriolic and profane.”

Quinn argued that “King’s memory represents, more than anything else, the idea that institutional arrangement – laws, ordinances and tradition – should be subordinated to the individual’s conscience.”

“The brand of civil disobedience he preached (and for which he is remembered) exhorts his followers to regard social reform as a process to be carried out in the streets,” Quinn added.

“Ignoring the real heroes in our nation’s life, the blacks have chosen a man who represents not their emancipation, not their sacrifices and bravery in service to their country; rather, they have chosen a man whose role in history was to lead his people into a perpetual dependence on the welfare state, a terrible bondage of body and soul,” he wrote.

Hmmmm …

Of course now that Quinn has become reliant on the black “leaders” who run the central region South Carolina – the base of his increasingly left-leaning political power – Quinn has changed his tune.

“By today’s standard (King) was a moderate … I admire him,” Quinn told BuzzFeed last spring.

Intersting … from vitriol to admiration.

Also of interest?  Two of Quinn’s top clients in the Palmetto State – S.C. lieutenant governor Henry McMaster and S.C. Senator John Courson – have both been embroiled in scandal related to their membership in a “whites only” country club in Columbia, S.C.

We wonder, do they “admire” King, too?

MLK’s stated goals were admirable, regardless of whether or not his personal morals were. There was so much hate against him that it is nearly impossible to weed the fiction from the facts.

My understanding is that MLK was working on a “basic income guarantee” policy for government, which personally I find deplorable-

But MLK, like most of us, was a complex individual trying to rectify the injustices of slavery while at the same time operating under a paradigm in which the same government that was partially responsible for crimes against blacks would ultimately somehow be the black man’s savior-

It’s a fool hardy notion, but MLK was a voice of hope that the black community needed even if at times he was off base/wrong.

The fact he was spied on by the FBI(and possibly threatened by them) shows that he couldn’t be all bad.

“I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” – Martin Luther King, Jr

That is to me the best quote of his lifetime. We need that still to this day, as our disappointing POTUS is first to defend color and ignore content of character, the Dr’s quote works both ways. We will always struggle until we can look only at good men or bad, and leave color out.

That’s okay. It’s really probably a good thing that you don’t.

Of course I think Dr. King would see the editor of this site for what he is; someone who points out people’s race whenever he thinks it will benefit his position and ignores when he does not. Whether he is a true racist, or someone like Lee Atwater who uses the racism of others for political gain, is unclear, but in that regard pointing out Mr. Quinn’s hypocrisy is the pot calling the kettle black, literally. Maybe one day SC will evolve to the point a minority’s race cannot be used against him or her, but we are not there yet. The southern strategy is still alive and well in this state; and this site and the Republican party use it very efficiently.

Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’

We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.

“Whenever the government provides opportunities and privileges for white people and rich people they call it ‘subsidies.’ When they do it for Negro and poor people they call it ‘welfare.’ The fact is that everybody in this country lives on welfare. Suburbia was built with federally subsidized credit. And highways that take our white brothers out to the suburbs were built with federally subsidized money to the tune of ninety percent. Everybody is on welfare in this country. The problem is that we all too often have socialism for the rich and rugged free enterprise capitalism for the poor. That’s the problem.”

MLK Jr.

If he were alive today, he might add ‘ and incentives’ after the word ‘subsidies’

There have been a few comments about the racist “Southern Strategy” and bigoted South Carolina. A look at the statistics reveal that racism isn’t just a Southern thing. I have also noticed southern civil rights leaders like Dr. King exhibited more faithful allegiance to non violence and Christian principles than their Northern counterparts. I believe this also lead to the following statistical differences between the North and South.

Often people change, and hopefully for the better. For instance, Fits tells us he used to be a drunk and a drug addict, now he’s changed, no longer an addict and is an upstanding, responsible businessman toiling away, working hard, raising a family. Quinn used to be a racist bastard, now he’s only mildly bigoted. Meanwhile, little Ricky Quinn runs around with Ed Givens, someone far more militant than MLK. Maybe little Ricky (by age not girth) will someday see the error of his ways too.

Rick Quinn got closer to Nikki Haley at the Confederate Flag bill signing ceremony than Will Folks ever did.

Back when Sic was a drunk, I frequently saw he, Trikki, Ricky, and often others imbibing in the Points, and Vista. Sic was usually at least that close to her in plain view, what else transpired I don’t know. When Trikki was a lowly House member, they were all thick as thieves.
