SC Attorney General Insists He’s Still On “The Probe”

ALAN WILSON’S OFFICE FIRES BACK ON RECENT PUBLIC CORRUPTION RECUSALS

|| By FITSNEWS || S.C. attorney general Alan Wilson remains an integral part of an ongoing state-federal investigation into corruption at the S.C. State House, his office tells FITS.

Wilson – who has twice recused himself related to prosecutions associated with “the probe” – hasn’t abdicated his prosecutorial authority, his spokesman Mark Powell said in response to questions from this website.

In fact Powell turned over documents (.pdf here) which he says showcase Wilson’s commitment to advancing the investigation – and noted Wilson’s advocacy in securing legislation which broadened the grand jury’s ability to target public corruption.

The probe” – which was exclusively unearthed by this website last September – has already brought down powerful former S.C. Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell.  Wilson didn’t handle Harrell’s prosecution, though, handing it off to S.C. first circuit solicitor David Pascoe.

Last week, Wilson recused himself again – citing undisclosed conflicts of interest regarding “certain legislative members.”

According to Powell, Wilson’s recusals have been “very specifically and very narrowly drawn.”

“He has not recused himself from the broader probe,” Powell said.  “That portion of the investigation remains open.”

And while Powell says Wilson’s detractors are entitled to their opinion, that doesn’t mean their assessment of his actions are informed – or accurate.

“The (attorney general) at every step of the way has kept this thing moving forward,” Powell said.

Another of Wilson’s defenders – a Republican donor who is encouraging Wilson to run for governor in 2018 – took it one step further, arguing this website’s recent criticism of his office was unfair, counterproductive and politically motivated.

“You are now bashing the guy who has fallen on his sword twice to ensure the very accountability your website insists upon,” the donor told FITS founding editor Will Folks. “Are you mad he’s not clamoring to take all the credit here?  Or that he’s not spilling his guts to you – and only you – in a way that would compromise ongoing investigations?  Or are you just carrying somebody’s water because he’s not your first choice for governor?”

Wow … ouch.

As we noted in questioning the lethargy of the probe back in April, we’re simply trying to hold everyone involved here – suspects and the investigators – accountable.

Also, as we’ve noted Wilson’s statement referencing “certain legislative members” has been widely perceived to mean politicians affiliated with the neo-Confederate political empire of Richard Quinn and Associates – which manages the political destinies of numerous state lawmakers and elected officials, including Wilson.

Some believe Wilson has dragged his feet related to the “probe” because it hits too close to his political home.

Whatever the case may be, multiple sources familiar with the inner workings of the investigation tell FITS Wilson is not driving the show.

“From all I have seen and been told, the feds are taking over,” one source familiar with the probe tells us.

FITSNews (ie the Democrats) are the only ones who really care about trumping up charges to de-power Republicans.

If you have proof the GOP is doing something wrong, repeal it. Or is it like the PROOF on Nikki Haley?

Obama is up to his neck in LEGITIMATE scandal and lawlessness, from IRS to Seal Team 6, and as long as the media plays ignorant, he gets away with it.

You’ve got nothing but hate, and you won’t STFU.

The thing is, the Republicans are and have been the dominant force in SC, for some time. As with the Democrats in power before them, their corruption, derived from something akin to absolute power, is out of control. They shamelessly cover for each-other and the beat of corruption gets longer and stronger each day. The hot, bright, light of truth needs to be shined on yhem until their behaviors are corrected and their problem children are out of office and/or in jail.

I’m not being an apologist for the sorry state of Repub corruption, but I have to say, ” Where is the viable opposition?”. The fact that the Dems can’t beat a Lindsey Gramham means we are in deep trouble when it comes to choices in the booth.

You are absolutely right, Taz. We have to get the idiot voting base to look at the people and what they’ve done in the past and are likely to do in the future, not their damn party label. I am no fan of Sheheen, but in desperation, I voted for him in hopes of seeng corrupt Haley out of office. Likewise, while I don’t agree with everything he has said or done, I voted for Bakari Sellers because I have seen some good things he said and did, plus people like McMaster are a big part of what is wrong with this state. I recognize that everyone with an “R” by their name is not necessarily a good or trustworthy person. That truth grow with each election cycle, as the “R’s” become more and more powerful. We need some balance to take away the absolute power and absolute corruption that it is breeding.

It is the most ignorant and arrogant who walk around accusing people of breaking the law w/ NO evidence or support. It’s an indication of low intelligence. FITSNews is a master of this. And it’s why it’s being sued.

Irrationally attacking others shows you to be a paranoid person, who feels small to others.

If you have some proof, voice it. But most of you think it makes you superior to rail on and on about corruption, despite not one fucking ounce of proof.

I’m not saying illegal things are not happening, but it’s ignorance to be claiming it ALL THE TIME by everybody, just to feel significant.

There are a LOT of good people who serve, to bash based on your deficiencies is a weakness on your part.

I NEED TO KNOW.. Who is attacking others and who are the others being attacked.? Who is a paranoid person and who feels small to others.? Explain , or STFU.. No needs to spend time on you and no needs to spend time on your opinion, if you are a paranoid person who feels small to others, I sure do not.. Did Curtis Loftis violate the laws? Nothing paranoid about that. Loftis is now very mute. Why ? Loftis, where are you? The cat got your … Loftis , talk to us, we need to know .. We love you.. Talk to us or respond.. Silence is acquiescence,. Silence is creepy.. Are you guilty?

Open your eyes and just watch. I was telling people about Metts and Knotts and others for years before a (very tiny) tip of that iceberg was finally visible and acted upon. No doubt you’ve read the numerous questionable deals Haley has been involved in, since LexMed and beyond. The shit is there for the seeing if you open your eyes rather than burying your head in the sand and saying, “not my people”.

If that is true, when the hell are they going to kick Loftis out?

CorruptionInColumbia August 7, 2015 at 2:05 pm

If and when he starts acting lime a crook, rather than impeding their attempts at self-enrichment as he is and has been doing for some time, now.

Legislator August 7, 2015 at 2:55 pm

How does the Treasurer get away with hiring s lobbyist firm? Bet he will say “they’re just tracking legislation.” That argument doesn’t pass the smell test. From what funds are Southern Strategies being paid? Is part of their salary coming from Columbia Management so it can’t be found by taxpayers?

Curtis is so ugly August 7, 2015 at 4:08 pm

If my dog was as ugly as Curtis Loftis, I would shave his ass and teach him to walk backwards.

Alotofbleach August 7, 2015 at 6:04 pm

You will need bleach, a lot of it .. Loftis’s butt is infected with “vile, incurable diseases..”. His own words..

Agreatday August 10, 2015 at 12:59 pm

Finally, Loftis was told to STFU . The Supreme Court, the FBI, SLED, the AG of South Carolina. his attorneys, Mike Montgomery, The State Inspector General … Could they have said to Loftis, to STFU? It is a great day in SC..

Justiceforfree August 12, 2015 at 8:40 pm

If I were an attorney in SC , I would take this case for free. Bashing gays, used to work for Curtis Loftis and hired by Curtis Loftis , a gay man… and fired for ? cause and … and bashing blacks men, and using the internet to bash and bear false accusations against people who have long spent many years to public service… Yes, I would take that case… for It is a violation of State and Federal laws to bear false … You Know the rest.. Loftis would make you a lot of $. Take the case. I would sue Loftis for violation of civil rights laws, slander and defamation of character.. Abuse of power in office , cyberbullying in office, violent temper in office.. sexual abuse in office. Enough of his crap, You will have a case.. Sue the shit of Melvin Curtis Loftis. and be an advocate for justice and get rid of sliming roaches like Curtis Loftis .

Guilty August 12, 2015 at 9:00 pm

Response from Melvin Curtis Loftis… Crickets… crickets… silence… State Treasurer of SC…??

Corrupt August 8, 2015 at 12:26 pm

Loftis can’t help the way he looks, it’s inside that he is so ugly and corrupt. He can be forgiven byGod if he sincerely asks for His forgiveness.

Loftis the dumbass August 7, 2015 at 3:56 pm

Bring back Grady! Bring back Grady! Loftis sucks!

Evilman August 8, 2015 at 12:21 pm

I hope Grady haunts Loftis every night for the way he has treated employees and wrongly accused them. Loftis is lazy. Reads and writes on Fits News while in the office or leaves for the day to do it at his house. Rants and raves in the office. Scares the employees. Has employees run personal errands for him on taxpayer’s dime.

Babysitter August 7, 2015 at 5:41 pm

Heard that Loftis babysat Alan Wilson.. Whao.. Wonder if they played doctor together? Heard that State Treasurer for six months Ravenel and Loftis were drinking and partying partners. Two peas in a pod…Funny and creepy how names connect and intermingle in South Carolina..

This makes a lot more sense, although still I do not understand the “very specifically and very narrowly drawn” conflict of interest issues. He is overall heading the investigations, but part not involved!! That doesnt make sense. From what we have seen of the Bobby Harrell’s case, was there ANY reason for the AG to recuse himself from that overall investigation and prosecution?? The answer is NO. I didnt see any reason based on the facts presented in the plea agreement. Harrell was going to plead….and these guys know how to tighten the screws, as they do with regular folks on a daily basis.
Anyway, glad to know the AG is working, as the citizens who are playing his salary expect him to. Good luck, Alan!
