Charleston, S.C. businessman John Tecklenburg reported raising $133,000 during the first quarter of 2015 – with $211,000 cash on hand.  According to a release from Tecklenburg’s campaign, more than seventy percent of his donors are from the Charleston area – contributing an average of $399 to his candidacy.

“As the only candidate in the race who’s never run for public office or built a political donor base before, we never expected to be first in contributors, and second in both total funds raised and cash on hand, at this point in the race,” campaign manager Joseph Tecklenburg said in a statement.  “That’s a remarkable accomplishment on the part of all of our 669 grassroots donors, and we’re honored to have their support.”

Earlier this week, S.C. Rep. Leon Stavrinakis reported raising $309,000 during the first quarter of 2015 – with $266,000 on hand.  Meanwhile fellow Democrat Ginny Deerin reported raising $215,000 with more than $188,000 on hand.

Deerin entered the race in February.

Two other candidates – city councilman William Dudley Gregorie and former city councilman Paul Tinkler (father of S.C. Rep. Mary Tinkler) – have yet to release their numbers.

Joe Riley has served as Charleston’s mayor since December 1975.  The 72-year-old politician announced last year he would step down at the end of this – his tenth term.

I bet 75% of the money raised for all candidates comes from developers or other real estate interests.
