The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) charged a former S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) employee with computer crimes on Monday (July 15, 2024) in Kershaw County, S.C.
Julia Haley Baker, 22, of Camden, S.C. – a former SCDMV clerk – allegedly misused a state computer system in an attempt to defraud consumers.
According to a probable cause affidavit accompanying a warrant for her arrest, Baker allegedly utilized “a state of South Carolina computer system to manipulate customer transactions as a scheme to defraud SCDMV customers or the department itself of funds valued at more than $10,000.”
These alleged crimes took place between the dates of May 1, 2023 and May 16, 2024.
Baker was booked at the Kershaw County detention center. Her case will be prosecuted by the S.C. fifth circuit solicitor’s office, according to a news release from SLED.
As with anyone accused of committing any crime, Baker is considered innocent until proven guilty by our criminal justice system – or until such time as she may wish to enter some form of allocution in connection with a plea agreement with prosecutors related to any of the charges filed against her.
