Santee Cooper’s Psalm 23

“Surely excuses and mis-management will follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of government ownership forever.”

The status of South Carolina’s government-run utility Santee Cooper has been among the hottest of hot button issues facing intellectually-incurious, results-challenged S.C. General Assembly this year.

As we have pointed out ad nauseam in recent months, had cranially deficient state lawmakers unloaded this utility when we told them to over a decade ago they could have netted the state billions.

Instead, they allowed it to embark on a catastrophically mismanaged nuclear reactor project using billions of dollars in government debt – while simultaneously socializing the investment risk undertaken by the utility’s “private sector” partner in the project, crony capitalist utilitySCANA.

Anyway, lawmakers are now toying with the notion of selling Santee Cooper, but per usual they are encountering difficulty extracting their headquarters from their hindquarters during that process.

Penning an “homage” to state lawmakers? Jim Clarkson, a 1968 Clemson graduate and energy industry advisor who has previously penned a guest column on this issue for our news site.

Apparently, Clarkson is quite versatile with his pen … as evidenced by his hilarious interpretation of Psalm 23 (as applied to Santee Cooper).

Enjoy …

SANTEE COOPER’S 23rd PSALM

The General Assembly is my shepherd, I shall not want.
Thou maketh me to lie about construction problems, thy leadeth me beside stilled public opinion.
Thou restoreth my territorial protection; thy leadeth me down the paths of government ownership for its own sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of nuclear debt, I shall fear no evil default; for thou art with me; thy coverups and thy blame-shifting they comfort me.
Thou preparest golden parachutes in the presence of my investigators: thou anointest my balance sheet with phony assets, my bonuses runneth over.
Surely excuses and mismanagement will follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of government ownership forever.

Pretty good, people … pretty good.

Once again, this news outlet supports the sale of Santee Cooper. We have for years. Hopefully lawmakers will get it done sooner rather than later because the ongoing discussions are only providing further evidence of what we have said all along: That government has no business being involved in the power generation business.

Listen to us now, hear us later …
