S.C. Rep. John King is reportedly considering a bid for the Palmetto State’s fifth congressional district this year. The Rock Hill, S.C.-based funeral home director – who has been a member of the S.C. House of Representatives since 2009 – would have to run in a Democratic primary against former vice presidential aide Fran Person, who recently received a fawning profile in The (Columbia, S.C.) State newspaper.
Assuming there is a primary between these two candidates, the winner would likely face “Republican” incumbent Mick Mulvaney in November.
So … will King run?
We’re not sure … and neither is he, apparently.
“He keeps going back and forth on that,” one Democratic source told us. “He considered it last time also.”
King’s prospective candidacy is being eyed extremely closely by S.C. Senator Wes Hayes, who is being challenged in a GOP primary for S.C. Senate District 15 (map here).
Why would Hayes care about a Democratic congressional primary?
According to our York County sources, the veteran “Republican” has relied for years on crossover Democratic support – especially support from “conservative” white Democrats. In other words, if there is a contested Democratic primary election on the same day he’s facing a challenge from the right in a “Republican” primary, his reelection becomes considerably more difficult.
The fact that this particular Democratic primary could pit a white candidate versus a black candidate makes Hayes’ situation all the more precarious …
