BATTLE LINES DRAWN IN THE AFTERMATH OF BANNER’S REMOVAL …

|| By FITSNEWS || The legislative debate over the presence of the Confederate flag on the grounds of the S.C. State House is over … mercifully.

After hours of emotional, acrimonious debate, the S.C. House voted 94-20 to remove the banner “free and clear” – which is exactly what the S.C. Senate voted to do earlier in the week by a 37-3 margin.

The decision came three weeks after the horrific, racially motivated “Holy City Massacre” – the mass murder of nine black churchgoers at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston, S.C.  The Mother Emanuel victims – among them S.C. Senator Clementa Pinckney, the church’s pastor – were gunned down during a Bible study by Dylann Storm Roof, a 21-year-old white supremacist who used the Confederate flag as his calling card.

We supported removing the flag.  In fact lawmakers pretty much followed our advice in taking the banner down sooner rather than later.  Now, hopefully both chambers can move on to addressing the myriad of issues which make South Carolina one of the poorest, least intelligent, most underemployed, most dangerous states in America.

Will they do that?

Doubtful …

The “heritage” crowd – which has already routed millions of tax dollars toward the preservation of various Confederate nostalgia – are pushing for new government funding for a “permanent shrine” to the flag.

We oppose such funding … just as we oppose government funding for any museum (Confederate or otherwise).

Meanwhile the “hate” crowd – fresh off of its victory – is said to be eying a broader “purge” of Confederate-related monuments, buildings, roads, etc.

In fact such a purge is the subject of the cartoon (above) from Ed Wilson.

For those unfamiliar with Wilson’s work, he draws once a week for Steve Robertson‘s Waccamaw Papers, and belongs to the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. In fact he won the Palmetto State Press Association’s award for editorial cartooning earlier this year.

It’s not that bad yet, but PC society is cleansing every reference to the Confederacy to absurd degree, even the Dukes of Hazard for crying out loud:

Well of course it doesn’t. But, you cannot rewrite history. It happened. People will regret this day. The hypocrisy and racism from those opposed to the flag knows no end. They just want to be able to dish out the same thing to the whites. They don’t want racial equality. Interact and it is obvious.

You have a hard time wrapping your head around the “big picture”, don’t you?

rubel July 9, 2015 at 2:31 pm

I see your point on the big issue, I get it, I do. But there is also a big issue on the other side.

We’ve compromised. We’ve done the right thing IMO. If we allow people to come together and bury this racial barrier — they will.

To me that is the “big picture” way of thinking.

Fecal Matters July 9, 2015 at 2:44 pm

I leave my house every morning hoping that I can brighten just one person’s day with a smile or a genuine greeting or gesture, not matter what that person looks like. I won’t sit here and explain that many of my friends and people who have made major positive impacts on my life are black, because some hate filled bigot lurking on FitsNews will lecture me about how insincere I am for tolerating my “negro” acquaintances. My (white) son is the only Caucasian player on his AAU basketball team. We attend tournaments where we are, literally, two of maybe a dozen non-black people out of a couple hundred. I know what it’s like to attempt to immerse yourself in an environment that you don’t always feel welcome in. I’m not, for a second, suggesting that I know what it’s like to be black, I’m simply saying that I know what it feels like to be looked at like I don’t belong somewhere and treated differently because of my skin color. We need to make a concerted effort to treat fellow humans better. We need to be inclusive toward anyone who is worthy of inclusion. I am hopeful that this is a step in the right direction.

And ALL the monuments should be removed. Its not a tit for tat argument..none of them a have a purpose there.

Waste Bin July 9, 2015 at 11:00 pm

Absolutely correct. No monument is ever truly needed on government land. If they cause this much division it turns from pointless to a huge unnecessary distraction. No monuments, no bullcrap.

If you want a monument that badly buy some property and put it there, then the government can go suck eggs and we can be left out of this shit.

E Norma Scok July 10, 2015 at 9:19 am

BOTH monuments should be removed–the AA monument and the Confederate flag. The AA monument was only a peace offering when the flag was moved from atop the statehouse to where it is now.

Take’em both down.

rubel July 9, 2015 at 11:40 pm

Maybe I am wrong — I always thought your alias was last name Shock. I beg your pardon if I am mistaken. I don’t disagree with your statement concerning monuments, but I do not agree now is the time.

I often told my husband early on in marriage – pick and choose your battles, you aren’t going to win them all – interpretation, not more than 50/50. If we win 50% of our battles we are fortunate in the best of marriages/relationships. There is also the song and dance -timing is very important.

It is long past time that flag was taken down. There will come a time that is right to move all those hateful memories to a museum – now isn’t that time.

notLindaBurke July 10, 2015 at 7:00 pm

White flight to suburbs from cities like Detroit and Baltimore is how they ended up as ghettoes. Combination of GI Bill housing money and interstates and “fear of others” did those cities in.

“There are lots of reasons that whites have so much more wealth than nonwhites. How the GI Bill played out is one of those reasons. Whites were able to use the government guaranteed housing loans that were a pillar of the bill to buy homes in the fast growing suburbs. Those homes subsequently rose greatly in value in coming decades, creating vast new household wealth for whites during the postwar era.

“But black veterans weren’t able to make use of the housing provisions of the GI Bill for the most part. Banks generally wouldn’t make loans for mortgages in black neighborhoods, and African-Americans were excluded from the suburbs by a combination of deed covenants and informal racism.

“In short, the GI Bill helped fostered a long-term boom in white wealth but did almost nothing to help blacks to build wealth. We are still living with the effects of that exclusion today — and will be for a long time to come.” http://www.demos.org/blog/11/11/13/how-gi-bill-left-out-african-americans

According to Rick Quinn, and the sycophant from Politico who wrote this article detailing the backroom deals to secure passage, Todd Rutherford has agreed to not “… go after …” other confederate monuments, statues, relics, etc.

http://www.politico.com/story/2015/07/confederates-at-the-brink-119873.html?cmpid=sf#ixzz3fOsk5200

For someone Fits fashions as a Neo-Confederate, “little” Ricky Quinn got himself some good national press out of this deal. Those of us who knew Ricky in college, knew he was referred to as “Little Ricky” back then, as he quickly ballooned up once in The House.

Interesting that this article says Quinn went straight to The House after college, which was true, but it infers that it was after he’d graduated, which was not true – took Quinn many years later to finally graduate with that History degree, and no acceptance into law school. Also, the article refers to his “drinking buddy” Ed “Snitch” Givens and Quinn’s promise that whatever compromise included taking down the flag, as a “lobbyist”. Why no reference to Ed “Snitch” GIvens as a convicted felon?

All of them are a bunch of scumbag cockroaches, and people like Quinn put SC through extended misery when that flag should have been removed when Beasley attempted to. Thanks for nothing, fat ass.

The mayor of memphis called for digging up nathan bedford forrest’s bones and moving them somewhere else so they can rename the park. McConnell called for removing Jefferson Davis from the kentucky capitol. People are calling for the removal of statues of Davis, Lee, Stephens, and various other people associated with the confederacy from the Rotunda. People are calling for Birmingham to move a memorial to confederate soldiers that looks like a miniature version of the Washington monument from a park there. People have called for a stained glass window with Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson on them to be removed from the national cathedral. People have called for a park in Baltimore to be renamed because it was named after a Confederate general. Confederate flags are no longer allowed to be sold at Civil War battlefields.

You bitched and moaned about SC needing to take the flag down ASAP, complained about anyone wanting to have an honest discussion about what would be the plans would be if it came down, and now that the flag is coming down, you say you’re opposed to any funding to put it in a museum!?
Well, maybe if you and the mainstream media assholes would have allowed those who had concerns to debate the issue without being vilified as modern day black hating, whip cracking men whose only agenda in Columbia is to return to Jim Crow, then maybe other groups could have chimed in, maybe started their own foundation for an appropriate venue; even though I’m sure no matter where it goes it will be blamed for anything racial, because the flag causes people to be racists and all. I predict we’ll be having this same debate in another 15 years of having to take it down from the museum.
I know your job is to create fire to keep people coming to your site, etc,, but for someone that claims to be such a free market, free speech guy, you sure did a great impersonation of liberals who are only open minded as long as you agree with them. There was no reason this issue should have been rushed through, shame to you, the media and outside groups. You helped successfully tear this state apart when it just came together like never before. I am a total beer snob, but there really is nothing better, on a blistering South Carolina afternoon, than an ice cold PBR. I always get a kick out of people who look down on my PBR at the lake, while they’re holding their Budweiser or Coors.

I had to look that up – PBR? I do remember Old Milwaukee’s Best. I’m a total beer snob too, but on the rare occasion I drink it, I prefer Black and Tan or Blue Moon.

If I’m not drinking an IPA, a double IPA, a tripel or a quad, I am drinking PBR. I honestly try not to touch any another American style lager beers, as most of them have zero character. Haven’t had an Old Milwaukee’s Best, the “Beast” as we used to call it, since college. I think I’ll hold onto that 20 year old memory. :)

We drank Old Millwater in college when there was a beer price war as it was always the lowest price.

rubel July 9, 2015 at 3:38 pm

Nothing like having to buy your own beer to make you appreciate the dollar….LOL

rubel July 9, 2015 at 3:16 pm

The Beast — Exactly!

I’ve read you or someone else mention that recently. I’ll have to try a few.

Name three characters from The Dukes of Hazzard and tell me what kind of car they drove.

Southern Pride July 9, 2015 at 3:09 pm

If you don’t want this to happen you need to take a stand now. WE MUST NOT CAST ONE VOTE FOR ANYONE WHO VOTED TO TAKE DOWN THE FLAG! That is the only way to send a message to those Senators and Representatives who abandoned the people who put them in power. We have to send a message. They are gone!

Reply
rubel July 9, 2015 at 3:20 pm

Lick your wounds, pick yourself up and shake it off. That ship has sailed. My Senator, who I typically do not agree with, had enough character to know this was the right thing for SC as a whole.

I am more likely to vote for those who chose to do the right thing vs. those who have strong held beliefs in lieu of what is the right thing to do for our state.

Reply
Southern Pride July 9, 2015 at 3:29 pm

You would have voted for him anyway! So he gained nothing. But 90% of people who disagree with this act would have voted for him as well. The loss of their vote will send a message.

Reply
rubel July 9, 2015 at 3:33 pm

No, as a matter of fact I have helped campaign against him. I still think he has been in office too long. I still have strong held beliefs that he was in the wrong when SC had a lost election.

I do think he was right this time. So does that 90% you are touting. If the people didn’t want it — it would not have happened.

I am not only proud of our state representatives, I am also proud of the people as a whole.

Southern Pride July 9, 2015 at 3:38 pm

I don’t think 90% of the people who did not want the flag down think he did the right thing, the loss of those votes will hurt and send a message.

rubel July 9, 2015 at 3:44 pm

I posted it yesterday. Most of your hardcore – FAR FAR FAR right leaning are in the upstate. Rep. Henderson sent out a survey, her district is a VERY conservative/traditional pocket of the state. It was overwhelmingly in favor of removing the flag.

That 90% of people who didn’t want the flag down is an insignificant portion of the people who actually vote and DID want it down. You are talking 90% of less than probably 10% of a couple districts. More specifically Bright and Pitts.

The debate is over and the majority are happy with the end result.

Speak D Truth July 9, 2015 at 7:26 pm

I can only assume that you representative is a Republican since this is SC. When election time comes around they will still be pissed that he voted to bring the flag down. They will then look at his Democratic opponent and realize that he also would have voted to take the flag down. Plus, They don’t share many, if any, political views with this guy. They will choose the lesser of two evils and the Republican will stay in office.
No matter who gets elected to office, They flag will never be placed back on the Statehouse Grounds. Whether we agree with the removal of the flag or not we must ask ourselves ” Do we vote democrat and condemn our future because we are pissed about a vote that is now in our past?”

Southern Pride July 10, 2015 at 12:29 am

Bull crap! If people vote for Republicans who voted to take the flag down they are cowards. They are being told, you have to vote for us, you have no choice. Terms are only two years. Even if a democrat wins we can vote him out after two years The important thing is to send a message that will not be forgotten!, and kicking these cowards is the way to send that message. Don’t be held hostage. Don’t be a coward. We must not vote for one single person who voted to take the flag down!!!!

Speak D Truth July 10, 2015 at 12:40 am

And how much damage will the democrats do in that 2 years? How much history and heritage will they destroy? How much more will they take away from you? You find a Republican in the primary then go for it. You put a democrat in office and you cut your nose off to spite to your face.

Southern pride July 11, 2015 at 1:44 am

Bull shit!

Hopefully, one more nail inthe coffin of Katrina’s political career. Hopefully, we see a lot of these self-serving roaches, regardless of which side they were on, voted out because their constituents didn’t like their position. She’s not the only one and this isn’t the only issue (reason) to vote many of them out.

Yes. Since most slave owners were white and most klansmen (if not all) were too, looking upon those of a pasty color will be hurtful to anyone descended or possibly descended crom African slaves. Caucazoids will necessarily have to undergo some form of pigmentation alteration to set this right.

Start with the removal of the Slavery monument on the State House Grounds.
That was part of the original deal to get the flag off the State House. So it should go: too.

It offends anyone who actually knows the real history of slavery, and who actually enslaved the blacks: Yankee Manufacturers in Mass., Conn., RI, New York, etc. and their get rich quick plantation owner partners. All financed with Yankee money. That monument covers up the truth, with wishful thinking lies and needs to go.
