… AND NOBODY NOTICED

|| By FITSNEWS || Remember years ago when S.C. governor Nikki Haley said that half of job applicants at the Savannah River Site (SRS) were high … and the other half were illiterate?

She eventually retracted the claim … although based on the news coming out of Aiken, S.C. this week you’d be forgiven for taking her at her word (for once).

According to the trade publication Weapons Complex Monitor, a critical safety system at SRS’s H Canyon chemical processing facility was knocked offline by a storm on January 7 – and no one at the facility noticed it the problem until February 3.  And yeah … it’s now March 9, so the public notification of this colossal pooch screw appears to be operating on roughly the same time lag.

We wonder … did Haley know about this incident sooner?  What about state legislative leaders?  And what about U.S. Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott?  Or members of South Carolina’s congressional delegation?

We can see how Graham may have missed that email, but come on …

H Canyon is the “only hardened nuclear chemical separations plant still in operation in the United States,” according to the government.  It was built in the mid-1950s for the purpose of recovering enriched uranium for reuse in weapons programs.  Since the early 1990s, though, it’s been used by America’s space program – and as a first step in making fuel for commercial nuclear power reactors (like those used by the Tennessee Valley Authority).

SRS swears none of the concentrated plutonium stored inside the facility ever exceeded “nuclear criticality limits,” but it’s still hard to view this as anything other than a colossal operational failure – one compounded by a total lack of transparency.

No need to worry. That safety system was probably some government regulation BS anyway. We don’t need that. This is a private company. We can trust them to act in the best interest of the public. If they don’t the free market will punish them

When will the government get off the backs of the job creators and start letting them run their business without interference.

The Savannah River Site is owned by the Department of Energy.

Which supports my point, that the private sector (in this case Energy Solutions) failed to ensure the system operated correctly.

FastEddy23 March 9, 2015 at 7:46 pm

To operate all of the safety systems, reliably, that’s not in their contract. … And Law Suits regarding such will be handed back to DOE.

GrandTango March 9, 2015 at 4:03 pm

Hmm… nuclear off-line, and regulated to H#!! and back by liberals…and Coal all but OUTLAWED by Obama…

Is this why the average amily is paying $3,500 more a year for HVAC since Obama took office (6 years X 3.5K = $21K)…???

Reply
Rocky March 9, 2015 at 4:41 pm

1. To be $3,500 more for your heating / electric a year would be about $300 a month more. Now down in the low lands, we use heat pumps most of the time, my electric bill is pretty constant the last six years. So again, you’re full of crap.
2. The other thing is, seriously, I never said I worked for the SRS, so honestly, you need to at least admit you’re wrong there. Now that said, nothing says Give Me Mo, Than fishes that Glow. You know, timber rattler’s are called glow worms – really true up outside Barnwell. I’d like to deer hunt up that way – you could probably get two racks with one shot – get it – two headed deer.
3. Regulatory regime around nuclear started in the late 70s after a bad accident, and doubled down by Reagan and Bush. So get your head out of your – glowing river.

mrbraindead12 . March 10, 2015 at 9:49 am

Fake Grand Tango has gotten boring as of late because he has no argument. What’s hilarious about Fake Grand Tango’s strategy is that it always starts out the same: “You dumb@$$ liberals and you’re a dumb@$$ Rocky.” Now, what’s interesting about this approach is that it incites feelings ranging from rage to outright pity. This is the mind of a person who has never had a clear, lucid, or logical thought. They’ve never really had a thought of their own to begin with. You see, his uncle Bubba started teaching him about politics years ago, and then Fake Grand Tango misconstrued these ideas into the warped, and tangled political ideology that only exists in his imagination. He is a caricature of a diehard Conservative. Possible troll. Possible BJU Student (because we know how closed minded they are, and it’s not a stretch to be honest.) Fake Grand Tango could also seriously be this deranged. Could Fake Grand Tango be Sandy? I never commented during the days of Sandy, but I had many a chuckle at their expense. It’s time to just give up on the troll, and move on. The sooner he’s gone, you’ll have someone more interesting to make fun of, because knowing FITS there’s going to be another idiot to catch on their logical fallacies and idiotic statements that make absolutely no sense.

Just FYI, for those of us lucky enough to be in the Eastern half of the state (and on SC public power), we have some of the lowest electric utility rates in the southeast (only WV and VA beat us out – think “COAL,” baby). No one’s rates have gone up that much, though. The US Energy Information Administration compiles this data every year- SC’ s average monthly residential electric utility bill is $134.86 (only very slightly above the regional average) even when considering the slightly higher rates charged by investor-owned utilities serving other parts of the state.

GrandTango March 10, 2015 at 6:15 am

And the unemployment rate is 5.6% according to federal “data” too. Dumb@$$.
But thanks for admitting that rates have been higher under Obama. That’s a MAJOR accomplishment getting one of you to be even partially honest.

Tic Tac? March 10, 2015 at 3:24 pm

I really thought that you and Mike in his bikini at the Beach would get along smashingly.

Serves me right for underestimating your ability to alienate those around you.

Mike at the Beach March 10, 2015 at 5:52 pm

First of all, you’ve never seen me a bikini so you have no idea how solidly I can rock a speedo. OK, that’s a lie. I would look silly in a speedo. However, if you think GT and I would get along, you haven’t read many of my posts here. Don’t confuse my lack of engagement with he/she/it as tacit approval. I limit myself to 10 minutes of FITS per day (for mental health maintenance), so I try not to waster precious minutes on that clown. Besides, I only just convinced myself that GT is a real person, as opposed to one of Will’s alter egos or a made-up troll. Some of the stupid that flows within those posts is simply hard to believe.

Mike at the Beach March 10, 2015 at 5:44 pm

Take your meds, weirdo. I admitted no such thing- utility rates are simply what they are. I was just providing you (politely, I might add) with some factual info I happened to have from a recent project I had worked in the energy sector. Is your position *really* that the average power bill is $300 higher in the past six years?! That number is an estimate from the energy industry in regard to future (potential) changes in regulatory posture. Your crazy-ass number of a $3500 increase is more than twice the size of actual SC utility bills which, of course, makes you stupid wrong. As usual, now that you’re busted (*again*) in a silly error / falsehood, you switch back to changing your metric, attacking anyone who disagrees, etc. You are truly a retard (although I mean that in the colloquial sense in that I wouldn’t mean to offend developmentally disabled folks, who are likely better at life than you). I usually avoid engaging you because you’re such a time / oxygen thief, but it looks like I’ll have to cowboy up and start backing Rocky up (although he spanks your ass pretty regularly with no help from me).

Dumbest Ass In Show March 10, 2015 at 8:51 am

SCE&G does not need Obama’s permission to raise your electric bill, they only need their lapdogs at PSC’s permission.

Reply
GrandTango March 10, 2015 at 9:13 am

When they are paying government-imposed regulation fees and to replace plentiful, cheap and clean coal, because Obama is shutting them down…the PSC has a very good case to RAISE rates, over and over. Dumb@$$..
Liberals have a habit of forcing up the cost to do business…then attacking the companies raising the price…so idiots (like you) will keep them in power, and feed their greed….at OUR expense…

I suppose the good news is that Aiken is upwind and upriver from SRS. The bad news is that Hilton Head (and everything in between) is not.

Yes but it is owned by the US Dept of Energy who contracts the work out. But to be reasonable is is like Obama’s State Department he knows what goes on in it when the news media informs him. As I was saying about government!

I am sure there is some law like “Murphy’s law” that covers this situation.
The safer a system is the less likely you are to detect a safety problem or react correctly when one occurs.
OR
Your ability to detect or react correctly to an emergency is directly proportional to how often they occur.
