The University of South Carolina football team went up … and down in the national rankings after this week’s less-than-impressive 28-25 win over Central Florida.

The Gamecocks (3-1, 1-1 SEC) moved from No. 13 to No. 12 in the USA Today/ Coaches’ poll – benefitting from West Virginia’s upset of then-No. 11 Oklahoma State. In the AP Top 25, however, the Gamecocks slipped a spot – from No. 12 to No. 13.

Clemson remained No. 3 in the AP Top 25 and No. 4 in the USA Today/ Coaches’ poll after its blowout win over Wake Forest. The Tigers received one first place vote in the coaches’ poll.

Back-to-back defending national champion Alabama remained the No. 1 team in the nation in both polls after dispatching another SEC West foe – previously undefeated Ole Miss. The Crimson Tide (4-0, 2-0 SEC) blanked the Rebels 25-0 in Tuscaloosa.

A surprise entry in the AP poll? Maryland …

The ACC also-rans – who went 4-8 last year – are undefeated through their first four games of 2013 and earned a spot in the regular season rankings for the first time in five years.

To the rankings …

I am proud of both teams – USC and Clemson – and wish both continued success. Almost all news that is reported by the national press about South Carolina is negative (and much of it justifiably so as it usually involves one or more of our esteemed Republican politicians – “you lie!’ – dealing and snorting coke – crashing planes – screwing around outside of marriage with all sorts of n’er do wells – need I go on?).
Go Gamecocks! Go Tigers!

UCF gets more votes after losing. You don’t see that often.
