The murder convictions of disgraced South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh were overturned by the South Carolina Supreme Court in May 2026, setting the stage for one of the most closely watched retrials in modern American legal history. The unanimous ruling found that former Colleton County clerk of court Rebecca “Becky” Hill improperly influenced jurors during Murdaugh’s original trial, concluding that she had “placed her fingers on the scales of justice” and undermined confidence in the verdict.

Now, prosecutors are preparing to retry Murdaugh for the June 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and younger son, Paul Murdaugh.
