This week’s big news involved explosive new developments in the ‘Murdaugh Murders‘ crime and corruption saga – notably our bombshell report that state investigators and prosecutors had launched a new investigation into what happened to the weapons used in South Carolina’s ‘Crime of the Century’ five years ago.
As FITSNews exclusively reported on Friday (September 25, 2026), agents of the S.C. Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and prosecutors affiliated with the statewide grand jury are probing reports that at least one Lowcountry law enforcement official assisted accused killer Alex Murdaugh in disposing of the weapons used in the double homicide of his wife and younger son.
Research director Jenn Wood and I explored this bombshell development – and its implications for Murdaugh’s upcoming retrial. We also discussed reports that Murdaugh’s attorneys have made significant progress linking the June 2021 murders of Maggie Murdaugh and Paul Murdaugh to a Lowcountry gang.
All of these seismic revelations are taking place ahead of Murdaugh’s scheduled April 2027 retrial in Sumter, S.C. – which is clearly going to be a vastly different proceeding than the one held in Walterboro, S.C. four years ago.

Worth noting: just hours after our report was published, S.C. circuit court judge Debra McCaslin – who is presiding over Murdaugh’s retrial – scheduled a new hearing in the case for October 18, 2026.
Previously, lawyers were not scheduled to appear before McCaslin until the middle of November.
In our second segment, chief photog and lead investigative reporter Andrew Fancher detailed his latest ‘Badges Gone Bad’ series related to the arrest of two Upstate law enforcement officers. Andy and I also discussed the selective transparency accompanying the incident.
Additionally, Andy previewed his upcoming reporting on files released from the substantially less-than-aggressive state and federal investigations of former Spartanburg County sheriff Chuck Wright.
