Officers of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) are working with local law enforcement in Anderson County, S.C. to investigate a “hunting accident” that left a juvenile seriously wounded during a squirrel hunt.
According to the agency, the accident took place on private property in Anderson County. No specific time or location was provided. Anderson County is located in northwestern South Carolina on the border with Georgia – just southeast of Greenville, S.C.
“A juvenile sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach while squirrel hunting,” SCDNR noted in a post on X. “The juvenile remains hospitalized.”
According to the agency, the juvenile “sustained an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the stomach.”

No additional information about the juvenile – or the incident which resulted in them being wounded – has been released by the agency.
SCDNR vowed to share “further updates… as more information becomes available.”
Squirrel hunting season in South Carolina began on October 1, 2024 and is scheduled to run through March 1, 2025. With the exception of a prohibition against hunting fox squirrels on designated public lands, there are no state-imposed limits on squirrel hunts, per SCDNR.
This is a developing story…
