KELVIN WASHINGTON ARRESTED AFTER RICHLAND COUNTY CAR CRASH
Richland County, S.C. councilman Kelvin Washington was already facing beaucoup problems related to his role in a major political scandal … now he’s got legal problems stemming from his personal life to deal with, as well.
Washington, 51, has been charged with felony driving under the influence (DUI) following a collision that occurred on Saturday evening near Hopkins, S.C.

The collision – currently under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) – occurred at around 7:45 p.m. EST near the intersection of Bluff Road and Martin Luther King boulevard in Hopkins. What happened? The vehicle Washington was driving allegedly slammed into the rear of another car. One person in the vehicle struck by Washington’s car was hospitalized with serious injuries. Another occupant sustained minor injuries.
Will state troopers get this investigation right?
We shall see … the SCHP’s track record of providing accountability in car crashes involving elected officials is less than stellar.
Washington is the second prominent Midlands-area leader to get popped for DUI this month. Last week Donnie Myers – solicitor for the Palmetto State’s eleventh judicial circuit – was arrested in the aftermath of a collision in Lexington County.
Washington and former city of Columbia, S.C. councilman Brian DeQuincey Newman turned themselves into authorities last month on tax charges related to the “Richland County Robbery” – a mushrooming scandal that centers around a rigged 2012 tax increase.
Investigations into the misappropriation of revenue from this tax hike – and the passage of the hike itself – are ongoing.
