Clemson University’s men’s basketball team extended a record run of futility this week – falling 80-69 to the seventh-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The defeat marked Clemson’s fifty-eighth straight road loss to North Carolina. How many games have the Tigers won in Chapel Hill?
Umm … none. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada.
It hasn’t been close, either. In fact twenty-six of the Tar Heels’ last twenty-eight home wins over Clemson have been by double digits. Is this ineptness an NCAA record? You better believe it. The previous record for consecutive home wins by one opponent over another was set by Princeton over Brown – 52 games spanning from 1929-2002.
This streak started in 1926. You know … when our founding editor’s hero Calvin Coolidge was president.
Clemson has come close to breaking the streak several times – most infamously in 2008. That year the Tigers enjoyed an 11-point lead over the Tar Heels with just three minutes remaining. Somehow, they found a way to cough up that advantage, falling 103-93 in double overtime. They also found a way to lose in 2002 – the year North Carolina went just 8-20 under former coach Matt Doherty.
Will the Tigers ever win a game in Chapel Hill?
No. They will not.
