|| By FITSNEWS || South Carolina’s taxpayers subsidized at least one of former governor Mark Sanford‘s romantic interludes with then-mistress Maria Belen Chapur back in 2008.
Missed that? Here’s a refresher.
Sanford eventually repaid the money, but it was the principle of the matter that bugged us: That a guy who lectured others on the inviolability of the taxpayer (and who built his career nickel and diming his staffers) would use public money to hook up with his mistress?
It’s beyond hypocritical … almost as hypocritical as Sanford’s stunning flip flop on corporate whoring (he used to be against it, now he’s for it).
Anyway … taxpayers are once again subsidizing Sanford’s hook-ups with Chapur, according to a source close to the congressman’s Washington, D.C. scheduling office. Specifically, Sanford’s congressional staffers handle all of Chapur’s scheduling and travel arrangements when she is in the United States – with the primary goal being to keep the couple shielded from the press.
“(Chapur) only goes to events with Sanford in D.C. after staff has confirmed that events are closed and no press (is allowed), one of our sources said.
Not only that, all of Chapur’s flight arrangements – and her travel in and around Washington, D.C. – is provided by Sanford’s office. On taxpayer time. Using taxpayer resources.
Does that make sense seeing as Chapur’s Argentine family is independently wealthy?
Of course not …
Unfortunately, chronicling the taxpayer resources devoted to Chapur’s visits will prove difficult. That’s because the “Luv Gov” and his scheduling office conduct all Chapur-related business on private email accounts in an effort to evade Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
Ah, transparency …
In fact the correspondence is such a closely held secret that several members of governor’s staff (what’s left of it, anyway) are deliberately kept unaware of Sanford’s comings and goings whenever Chapur is “in country.”
“Staff doesn’t know where he is when he’s with (Chapur) in D.C.,” a source tells FITS.
Wait … didn’t that cause a problem in the past?
Um, yes.
Chapur – the woman at the heart of Sanford’s 2009 sex scandal (and subsequent implosion) – is in Washington, D.C. this week with her boyfriend, who last fall called off their two-plus year engagement in what can only be described as his typical “TMI” fashion.
According to our sources, Sanford made his nauseatingly navel-gazing social media move in an effort to get his ex-wife Jenny Sanford “off of his ass.”
We like Chapur. Always have. She’s beautiful, classy and rich – which makes her pairing with a whiner like Mark Sanford all the more inexplicable.
But as highly as we think of “Belen,” we shouldn’t have to subsidize her hook-ups with her man. In any way, shape or form.
And a so-called “fiscal conservative” like Sanford should know better than to make us …

Can’t blame Jenny for making him live up to the terms of their settlement. Sanford excels at evasion of the truth and would readily rewrite history to whitewash his deceitful behavior..

There is none which is why there is a question mark in the title (such great reporting).
You know almost every member of Congress’s scheduler helps out with travel for the significant other. I am not a fan of Sanford but this is just crap. Report on how he votes, the fact that no other members want to work with him, or his revolving door of staff who can’t stand him. Don’t call him out for something that every other member does.
Have to agree as a former something, something who has experience in this. It’s not a scandal in some as what is “reported” here.

Will – seriously. A scheduler with five minutes spar time can easily go online and book her flights. So long as she or he is paying the bill, I don’t see that as a huge misuse of public resources. Figure Tammy Twit is making $40,000, if it takes her ten minutes – what – we’re talking about $3. A lot of people in private industry use their corporate travel offices to book vacation flights etc – because they can get cheaper deals. And anything that gets Maria up here, and pissing off the Anglo-spoiled-brat blonde Southern Charm types of Charleston is money well spent.

I hate to come to the defense of a slimeball like Sanford, but I have to agree with you. Nothing to see here.

But I think when it comes to Sanford, using his staff to do personal stuff for his girlfriend is something worth reporting on given his particular track record. And the “all members do it” excuse hasn’t held water since third grade.
No way to know how much tax money and campaign money has been used to foster the adulterous relationships of Mark Sanford, Bob Peeler and Richard Eckstrom. If a dime, it was too much!

You can’t un-ring that bell. Sanford was unmasked 6 years ago. He hooked up with a damaged, entitled, self-absorbed woman without morals, like himself. Actually, his best shot at success was with Jenny, who loved him and tried to make him a better man; a respectable, family man with goals and ambitions. He took the fruits and rewards of those labors away from her and their family. Now he is a bitter man with an aging, desperate woman who feels he owes her something after 7 years. Jenny had a stake in his success. This bimbo at 50 has diminishing prospects in Argentina; either as an old guy’s mistress or a younger man’s cougar. Even Sanford recognizes her as fools gold but blames his former wife, like the wiener he is, for why his relationship with soulmate is at a standstill. Chapur meanwhile, despises being labeled the OW or mistress since her adulterous lover has been divorced more than 5 years. She is with a jackass like Sanford who resents the work that goes along with a formal coupling and is probably peeing his pants, that his estate can’t take another divorce. Like Camilla and Charles, they can marry, but they will always be less than, because even today, their lives remain built around hiding, lying, and deceit.

Sanford and Chapur are a modern day Everyman parable. Even though their behavior is predictable and cliched, it is not harmless. It is instructive that we recognize that some people should not marry in the traditional sense, as they lack the selflessness and commitment that is required for success. Their infidelity leaves behind chaos and questions which find resolution with ugly answers.

Sanford is setting himself up to be arrested and charged with felonies ….. if Fitsnews’ sources are correct, and the evidence is acquired proving such, Sanford will be gone before years end. But we must also understand, this is normal for most all Congressional staff doing things like this. Might as well take out a few dozens of them, ya think? But then, that’s wishful thinking.

Hell let’s start at the top, how much taxpayer money is being paid to send Obama’s extended family and in-laws on trips around the world? Is he paying for his mother-in-law to ride on Air Force One or be booked into 5-Star luxury hotels? Who’s paying for the food she eats these trips and does she have her own personal security detail?
