Letter: Senators Should Vote “No” On Cell Phone Tax

Published

on

Dear Editor,

Why are so many people jumping on the bandwagon to increase cell phone taxes to subsidize the telecommunication industry (IE maintain land line infrastructure in rural areas)?

This is another bad law with good intentions.  I urge everyone to do their own research on S. 277.  There are so many special interests involved that the obvious issue is clouded.  Personally I believe before they expand any existing law, perhaps they should ensure the existing law has proper oversight and accountability.

As it is telecommunication companies can withdraw existing monies from an existing fund, but are NOT required to provide accountability of how their subsidies are spent (we see how this impacted the S.C. State University fiasco).

Please call your Senators and urge them to vote “No” on S. 277 or at the very least FIX THE LAW BEFORE EXPANDING it to 4.5 million South Carolina cell phone owners.
