Mick Mulvaney Issues Statement On Syria

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Mulvaney released the following statement on the proposed military action in Syria:

“Over the past two weeks, I have spent a considerable amount of time considering all of the facts presented about the situation in Syria. I have attended two classified briefings, met with the Secretaries of State and Defense, and talked at length to members of Congress from both parties. My staff has also spoken directly with the White House. I can assure everyone that we have given this matter the attention that it deserves.

I looked hard for a direct and relevant national interest that justifies getting involved in the civil war in Syria. I found none.

I gave considerable consideration to the implications of inaction on the international prohibition on the use of chemical weapons. And while I am concerned about taking no action, it strikes me that international law cannot be upheld via unilateral attack by the United States.

With that as background, then, I will not support the proposed military action in Syria at this time.

Finally, I have received more — far more — phone calls, emails, and FaceBook comments on this issue than for any other topic during my short time in office. I appreciate people taking the time to do that. It does make a difference. “
