Employees at South Carolina’s welfare agency were sent a memo this week notifying them of a staffing change first reported on by FITS.

According to the memo from S.C. Department of Social Services (SCDSS) director Lillian Koller, her firing of longtime deputy director Linda Martin was part of an internal “reorganization” designed to better “integrate and strengthen job attainment and job retention outcomes.”

This scam, in other words.

Koller’s memo also announced the hiring of Amber Gillum from Washington State as the new state director for “economic services.”

“Prior to coming to South Carolina, Amber spent 13 years serving the state of Washington in several capacities, including the Governor’s WorkFirst coordinator (Washington State’s welfare-to-work program),” Koller wrote.

Like the rest of S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley’s administration, her welfare agency has been nothing short of an unmitigated disaster.

Don’t believe us? Read for yourself herehere and here.

More recently, Koller’s agency has been dragging its feet when it comes to implementing the key only agenda item in Haley’s so-called “war on fat.”

“Prior to coming to South Carolina, Amber spent 13 years serving the state of Washington in several capacities, including the Governor’s WorkFirst coordinator (Washington State’s welfare-to-work program),” Koller wrote.

Later Koller was overheard to say, “She also munches my rug just the way I tell her to, so on that basis alone I want her around.”

Linda Martin was one of the finest professionals I ever knew. She oversaw the whole welfare reform initiatives of the 90’s and guided SC carefully through that period. We are losing a fine professional person who served her state well. I fail to see how her replacement will be of more benefit to the state. Last I heard, she was one of the few left that would speak truth to power. Lillian, you don’t know what you are doing. This is clearly a path to destruction. You are a fool.

Sorry it was time for her to go. Not as fine as one may think.
