Columbia, SC – The South Carolina Republican Party will host Sen. Ted Cruz as keynote speaker and feature a special tribute to former Sen. Jim DeMint at its 46th annual Silver Elephant Celebration on May 3, 2013.
The Silver Elephant Celebration is a South Carolina tradition celebrating the state’s vibrant Republican Party, with past speakers including: Ronald Reagan, John McCain, Newt Gingrich and Marco Rubio.
“The Silver Elephant Celebration has a storied tradition of bringing the brightest stars in the GOP to South Carolina – many of whom have run for national office. Reflecting on that tradition, we felt that Senator Ted Cruz was a compelling choice. With a commitment to less government and more freedom, he is clearly a Jim DeMint brand of Republican. In only a short time we have seen Senator Cruz lead on issues ranging from the deficit to gun rights to efforts to repeal Obamacare and with his diverse background, intrepid work ethic and unparalleled intellect, Senator Cruz is exactly the type of leader we need in Washington. As we honor Senator DeMint and his service to South Carolina, we will be privileged to hear from Senator Cruz as he carries on the work Senator DeMint started,” said Chad Connelly, chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party.
Cruz, the former Solicitor General of Texas and Associate Deputy Attorney General for President George W. Bush, was elected as the Junior Senator from Texas in 2012 and has quickly emerged as a leading voice in the conservative movement.
