In news which will no doubt be greeted with prolonged applause from our founding editor’s many “haters,” his 2013 fantasy baseball season got off to an inauspicious start  this week.

In the opening game of the season, Texas Rangers’ starter Matt Harrison (taken by Will Folks’ FITS Lollygaggers in the 23rd round of this year’s Great Santini Fantasy Baseball League draft) was rocked for six runs in five and two-thirds innings against the Houston Astros. For those of you keeping score at home that equates to a 7.94 earned run average – although to his credit Harrison did strike out nine batters.

Still, though …

So, who made the Lollygaggers’ roster this year? Here’s our Opening Day roster …

C- Alex Avila, Detroit Tigers
1B- Ike Davis, New York Mets
2B- Dan Uggla, Atlanta Braves
SS- Starlin Castro, Chicago Cubs
3B- Lonnie Chisenhall, Cleveland Indians
MI- Dustin Ackley, Seattle Mariners
CO- Brandon Belt, San Francisco Giants
OF- Jacoby Ellsbury, Boston Red Sox
OF- Matt Holliday, St. Louis Cardinals
OF- Desmond Jennings, Tampa Bay Rays
U- Bryce Harper, Washington Nationals
U- Mark Trumbo, Los Angeles Angels

Reserve- 1B Lance Berkman, Texas Rangers
Reserve- 2B Brian Roberts, Baltimore Orioles
Reserve- 3B David Freese, St. Louis Cardinals
Reserve- SS Jhonny Peralta, Detroit Tigers
Reserve- 2B/3B Jedd Gyorko, San Diego Padres
Reserve- OF Andy Dirks, Detroit Tigers
Reserve- OF Leonys Martin, Texas Rangers

P- Rafael Betancourt, Colorado Rockies
P- Dan Haren, Washington Nationals
P- Matt Harrison, Texas Rangers
P- Josh Johnson, Toronto Blue Jays
P- Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers
P- Craig Kimbrel, Atlanta Braves
P- Lance Lynn, St. Louis Cardinals
P- Adam Wainright, St. Louis Cardinals

Reserve- Trevor Cahill, Arizona Diamondbacks
Reserve- Ross Detwiler, Washington Nationals
Reserve- Brandon League, Los Angeles Dodgers

Our founding editor (along with several prominent South Carolina politicos) plays in a standard 12-team, 5X5 league. After nearly winning the coveted Santini Cup in 2007, it’s been a bumpy ride for his team of late. In fact the Lollygaggers haven’t made the playoffs for five consecutive years (ouch). Will this be the year they finally turn it around?

Who knows …

Anyway, we wish you the best of luck on your 2013 fantasy baseball season! And whatever’s left of your 2013 March Madness bracket!

More than a few years back, a friend suggested to me that we form a fan club for the MLB team rated the worst (by professional sportswriters) for the upcoming season. That honored team was the Detroit Tigers. I called their home office to tell them what we were doing (without explaining the reason). I also asked if they would provide us with free caps and jackets, and perhaps some pennants, towels, or whatever. Several days later I received a call in which we were refused – because at that time no Detroit Tiger game was televised in South Carolina! After our embarassment (because not one of us checked), we did have a good laugh at ourselves.

if anyone’s unaware of ,’Santini’,you should see the movie or read the book(a lost pastime),’The Great Santini’.It’s one of Pat Conroy’s best books, although, one of the Conroys’ told me,the movie made his dad look like a saint;’he was a true bastard’.
