Dilly Dilly? Not At Augusta

Free speech is not an unqualified right.

You can’t yell “fire” in a crowded theater, for example.  Nor, apparently, can you yell “Dilly Dilly” at The Masters, the signature event of the Professional Golfers Association of America (PGA) which opens play today in Augusta, Georgia.

According to Bryce Ritchie of Bunkered,  earlier this week “security staff at Augusta National (were) handed a sheet with a list of sayings that are prohibited” by Masters’ attendees.

On the list?  “Dilly Dilly,” the medievally inspired catchphrase of Bud Light – the top-selling beer in America.

Wait … are we seriously having this discussion?

Yes …

American society has apparently descended to the point where its inebriated citizenry must be reminded not to scream the latest #DrunkUtterance in the gallery of the most prestigious golf tournament in the world.

Not the sort of thing Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson or Sam Snead had to contend with, huh?

Anyway, Bud Light has responded to the ban through its unofficial “Dilly Dilly” spokesman, King John Barley IV.

According to Barley, his royal tailors will “make 1,000 Dilly Dilly shirts that shall be delivered to Georgia in time for the festivities.”

“For if thou cannot say Dilly Dilly, thou can still wear Dilly Dilly,” Barley noted in a tweet.

Sheesh …

What a marketing coup … as if Bud Light (America’s best-selling beer since 2001) needed Augusta National to provide it with a forum free advertising.

Oh well.  Chug your suds, morons.  Chug your suds …
