As South Carolina enters into the 2024 election cycle, Senate District 26 will be at the top of the political watch list. Democrat Nikki Setzler held this seat for 48 years – and recently announced that he will not be seeking re-election.

On September 12, 2023, Lexington County Republican Chris Smith announced he would be filing to run for the seat. Many constituents of the district recognized Smith’s name from his 2020 run against Setzler.

Smith won close to 20,000 votes, dominating the Calhoun County portion of the district by a large margin while outperforming any prior Republican candidate in Cayce and West Columbia. He did this by making a campaign promise to be the voice representing conservative values at the statehouse.

Even though Smith was not victorious in 2020, he’s continued to demonstrate his commitment to that promise. He is known to frequent the statehouse two to three days a week while the legislature is  in session. Smith has testified in front of several Senate and House subcommittees for various issues such as The Right to Life Act, Fetal Heartbeat Act, Save Women’s Sports and most recently the Help Don’t Harm bill. Smith also used his voice to show strong support for what is now the Election Integrity Law. The law emphasizes one-person-one-vote, cleaning up voter rolls, and makes voter fraud a felony punishable by $5,000 – and five years imprisonment per offense.

Mark Weber, the chair of the Lexington County GOP has made it known that this seat is their top priority, and when they look at possible candidates Chris Smith is the only one that checks all the boxes by upholding the party’s mission statement and platform. He has remained active in both the county and state GOP.

Smith has been endorsed by Senate majority leader Shane Massey as well as state representative John McCravy, moderator of the Family Caucus, which is composed of 48 house members and three senators who represent conservative values, as well as citizen’s organization Veterans for Trump.

Faithful conservatives in the Senate have indicated that they need help, and Chris Smith is that help.  Chris is the clear conservative choice, and the rapidly growing support for his candidacy shows it.
