POLL SHOWS SOUTH CAROLINIANS JUST BEGINNING TO FORM CONCRETE OPINIONS ABOUT NEW GOVERNOR …

Two months ago this website argued Henry McMaster should be given a blank slate as governor of South Carolina.  We still feel that way – although after one month into his dream job, McMaster is beginning to fill in his canvas (both positively and negatively).

The 69-year-old career politician – who envisions himself as leading the Palmetto State for the next ten years – remains an undefined quantity among his people, though.  If you believe the results of a new Winthrop University poll, that is.

According to that survey, 44 percent of South Carolinians said they approve of the way McMaster is handling his new job compared to just 16 percent who disapprove.  Meanwhile 36 percent said they “didn’t know” what to think of McMaster just yet – and four percent refused to answer the question.

A blank slate, in other words …

We’ve previously urged our readers to take the results of Winthrop’s latest poll cum grano salis, particularly as they relate to the approval ratings of U.S. president Donald Trump.  Having said that, the survey’s data seems about right for McMaster – a Republican politician who has never held a high-profile statewide office before.

McMaster got his job as governor thanks to Trump – who appointed his predecessor Nikki Haley to the post of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

How’s that working out for Trump?  Eh …

For McMaster, though, he’s not only been handed his dream job on a silver platter – he’s had a path to the 2018 GOP gubernatorial nomination virtually cleared for him.

Virtually …

As McMaster begins to define himself on the statewide stage, we’ll keep a close eye on how South Carolinians are responding to him and his policies – particularly Republican primary voters.

A month into the job, though, McMaster’s slate is pretty much blank …
