SPECIAL NEEDS SCHOOL BREAKS GROUND ON $2.2 MILLION ADDITION …

A nonprofit South Carolina special needs school broke ground this week on a new gym and recreation center, officials announced.

Sandhills School teaches children diagnosed with learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).  The school’s Columbia, S.C. campus – located off of Garners Ferry Road – consists of 22 partially wooded acres including a pond, wilderness trails, wildlife, protected beehives, sports fields and a playground.

“Sandhills develops the potential of each student by fostering intellectual curiosity, principled character and a commitment to serve,” the school’s website states.

Sandhills’ new facility will feature a “state of the art maple basketball court with retractable goals, a fine arts performance stage, class rooms, meeting areas, weight room, and an outdoor social gathering area with fireplace,” according to architects at Boyer Construction.

An outdoor basketball court and tennis facility will be built adjacent to the $2.2 million, 18,000 square foot structure.

Sandhills kicks off its 2017-18 school year this Thursday.

Congrats to the school, its staff and students on their expansion – and best wishes for continued excellence in the future.
