GOP CANDIDATE REFUSES TO RULE OUT “ENHANCED INTERROGATION TECHNIQUES”
|| By FITSNEWS || Former Florida governor Jeb Bush left the door open for the United States government to resume its clandestine torture program – arguing “we’re in a different environment” now than when his brother, former president George W. Bush, supposedly put the kibosh on some of the program’s more controversial “enhanced interrogation techniques.”
We sure are in a different environment … one of our own making.
Asked in early-voting Iowa whether he would keep in place an executive order from Barack Obama banning the use of torture, Bush demurred.
“I don’t want to make a definitive, blanket kind of statement,” he said. “When you are president your words matter.”
Um, that’s correct. They also matter when you’re running for president.
Last December, a report revealed America’s “enhanced interrogation techniques” were far more brutal – and far less effective – than originally suspected. The report also concluded that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) – which oversaw the $300 million program – “provided incomplete and inaccurate information to the White House regarding the operation and effectiveness of the detention and interrogation program.”
For example the report revealed that intelligence leading to the May 2011 killing of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was obtained from “a CIA detainee who had not yet been subjected” to torture techniques. Additionally, detainees who were subjected to these techniques “withheld and fabricated information” about the al-Qaeda courier who ultimately exposed bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
Our view?
America’s torture program – like its drone attack program and its ongoing “War on Terror” – has not made our country safer. If anything, it has incited anti-Americanism around the globe (and rightfully so).
Bush – and any credible candidate for the White House – should oppose the program for those simple reasons.
We’ve long maintained America has an obligation to defend itself from credible threats (and to do so using overwhelming force). And we’ve never seen the virtue of proportional responses when dealing with those who seek to kill American citizens. Accordingly we welcome intervention abroad – when it’s justified.
But we’ve also long maintained that torture is “beneath a great nation,” and its use is “further evidence of how far America has fallen from the ideals upon which it was founded.”
