“LUV GOV’S” FINANCES EYED AS PRIMARY CHALLENGE NOW LOOMS …
|| By FITSNEWS || U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford raised $121,000 during the second quarter of 2015, according to Federal Election Commission reports. That six-figure haul gives the former two-term South Carolina governor more than $640,000 in cash on hand in his congressional account – tops among the South Carolina congressional delegation.
Sanford also has more than $1 million sitting in his statewide account … prompting speculation that he might run for his old gubernatorial office again in 2018.
A week ago, Sanford’s fundraising numbers wouldn’t have meant much to anyone – but reports that he will likely face S.C. Rep. Jenny Horne in a primary battle next spring have focused attention on his war chest.
This website has zero use for Sanford – who has sold out on a whole host of issues (most recently, Obamatrade).
But make no mistake: He’s an exceedingly disciplined fundraiser. And having gone “all-in” for the GOP establishment during his second tour in Washington, D.C., expect the GOP establishment to go “all-in” for him.
For her part, Horne is looking to capitalize on the fifteen minutes of fame she achieved last week’s contentious debate over the Confederate flag. The longtime fiscally liberal lawmaker believes her emotional (albeit fact-challenged) speech calling for the flag to come down gives her the opportunity to raise national cash.
She’s also no doubt banking on Sanford’s always entertaining personal life to create yet another meltdown …
