PROPOSAL WOULD AMEND STATE CONSTITUTION TO STATE THAT LIFE BEGINS AT CONCEPTION

|| By FITSNEWS || S.C. Senator Lee Bright has introduced legislation which would amend the Palmetto State’s constitution so as to affirm that life begins at conception – and extend “equal protection of the laws” to all “born and preborn” persons.

Bright’s personhood bill – S. 719 – was praised by pro-lifers.

“It is time to let the people vote,” pro-life advocate Steve Lefemine said in a statement supporting Bright’s bill.

Lefemine noted that 78 percent of “Republican” primary voters expressed their approval for such a measure during last spring’s GOP primary elections.

According to the language of the proposed amendment, the state’s constitution would be modified so that “no person shall be deprived of life without due process of law, nor shall any person be denied the equal protection of the laws” and that “these rights shall extend to both born and preborn persons beginning at conception.”

Bright and four other State Senators – Ronnie Cromer, Mike Fair, Larry Grooms and Danny Verdin – have already introduced similar personhood legislation at the statutory level.

Specifically, their bill – S. 129 –  would amend state statutes so “that no person shall be deprived of life without due process of law, nor shall any person be denied the equal protection of the laws” and that these rights “vest at fertilization for each born and preborn human person.”

That bill – pre-filed last December – was referred to the Senate’s Judiciary Committee on January 13.  It has yet to even receive a hearing.

What’s the difference in the bills?  One seeks to establish personhood statutorily (via a vote of the legislature), the other seeks to establish it constitutionally (via a vote of the people).  Of course for the people to have their voice heard on the issue, two-thirds of both the S.C. House and State Senate must sign off on their right to vote on the issue.

Like Bright, we believe life begins at conception – and that taking life (at any state of development) is the most egregious, irreversible violation of the most sacred, fundamental liberty we have.  This is why we’ve consistently opposed “abortion on demand.”

Having said that, we’ve never seen a problem with women taking the morning after pill (which prevents pregnancy) – and there are obviously situations in which a woman should have a choice as to whether to carry a baby (i.e. rape and incest).

Bright’s bill would criminalize these reasonable exemptions … which is why we cannot support it.

Now, assuming a version of the legislation was offered which addressed these concerns, we would have no problem backing it – and encouraging members of the S.C. General Assembly to put it before the voters.

The Devil is always in the details. Would local prosecutors have to investigate every miscarriage, just on the chance that it was the result of some act of the pregnant woman?

And, would every pregnancy have to be registered — within what time frame from fertilization? Perhaps tardy registrations would be escalating misdemeanors as tardiness increases.

What would be the impact on classification of dependents for tax purposes?

Could pregnant women be enjoined from travel to less restrictive states, and what if they came back unpregnant? Could they still declare that dependent?

What a Fascist bunch of goons backing this proposal!

They do give a shit, just not like normal people do. Taxpayer money helps make sure children from unplanned pregnancies have formula, food, health care, schooling, even shelter in some cases. That really pisses them off and they want it to stop. They don’t want to stop it with programs that lower unplanned pregnancies. They just want the aid to stop.

Why can’t we cure cancer? Why do men keep pushing this agenda? If embryos are considered adults why aren’t you screaming to outlaw guns? But strictly from me STFU because you are hypocrites.

Sharon Diehl January 20, 2016 at 9:18 pm

Honey, don’t be a doofus. Most human embryos fail to implant because they miss a favorable window of 6 to 12 days after fertilization. Half of all pregnancies end in spontaneous abortion (March of Dimes estimate). Most embryos are never born, sweetie. What difference does it make if a woman chooses not to gestate her embryo? None.

I see some overzealous solicitors office setting up a “personhood taskforce” and start bring manslaughter charges for every miscarriage whether “natural”, the result of tripping and falling, single car vehicle accident, etc. Will Doctors be required to report all miscarriages or suspected miscarriages to SLED, The County Sheirff, DSS, and the Solicitors office for investigation. I don’t see any good that can come of this, no matter what your personal feelings on abortion. This has only the potential to create a ton of problems via the law of unintended consequences.

Will, why are rape and incest so horrible that someone’s life must be taken, simply so the mother does not have to deal with the “recurring reminder?” One person’s temporary loss of some liberties is not a substantial reason to end the life of another. Even if a teenager is assaulted by a family member and the resulting child will be mentally handicapped and most likely die prematurely murder cannot be justified. Only when someone is physically threatened of their life, read self defense, is taking someone else’s life acceptable; morally or (should be) legally.

You do indeed need to “think more.” Consider a young pregnant mother with several young toddlers diagnosed with breast cancer. The hormones associated with pregnancy would cause the cancer to spread at a high rate, most likely killing the mother and perhaps the unborn baby. If it were your wife, you go ahead and try to pray it away. If it were my wife, she and I would make the decision to terminate the pregnancy.

The man who blames the government for his own failed business decisions. I also liked Sen. Grooms, but I am starting to wonder what the hell he is thinking?

I personally think that life begins at conception, abortion is not a thought that I have ever personally considered an option. However, I also believe there are cases where there are exceptions to the rules. These bills are a doctors nightmare and a lawyers dream.

Just say no.

Thank goodness, the U.S. is not a crazy theocracy, and the rest of us are free to live our lives as we see fit–i’s called personal freedom, which is a threat to religious dogma. As long as people are allowed to live their lives away from the buybull and other religious tomes, religious faith gets weaker along with the credibility of religions.

Go hump your buybull, dear, you’ll feel better.

You could have saved much time and effort by simply answering the question. Your answer appears to be “it’s called personal freedom.” And if that’s what you believe, may the consequences be upon you.

Sharon Diehl January 22, 2016 at 2:56 am

Pointing out the lack of critical thinking skills and downright stupidity of silly young-earth creationists is always worth the time and effort, dear.

dougmcburney January 22, 2016 at 12:28 pm

What does the age of the earth have to do with how old your baby was when you killed him?

Is it that you are a guilt ridden, post abortive heathen trying to find solace in arguing Bible stories when in fact you are smothered by the overwhelming guilt of your sin and lies?

Or maybe you’re just interested in science? If so, here you go:

Sharon Diehl January 22, 2016 at 2:08 pm

Honey, your link is an excellent example of young-earth stupidity! You can’t tell the difference between “science-sounding”, i.e., “pseudoscience” and actual science. Here is actual SCIENCE link on radiometric age dating.

Sweetie, the point is–you’re a religious wingnut, If you can’t understand basic earth and biological science (I’m sure you don’t understand evolutionary processes either), why in the world do you think anyone would listen to your archaic opinion on women and reproduction? I’m sure you’re clueless that most fertilized eggs never implant, or that in a quest to produce one child, a woman will spontaneously abort 5 out of 9 embryos before a successful pregnancy. Did your ‘god’ change his/her/its mind about endowing a ‘soul’ on those embryos? Is ‘heaven’ composed of gooey embryos wafting blindly about?

Sweetie, I have a doctorate in geochemistry/geology. I deal with you illogical idiots all the time–I don’t bother being polite anymore. The pro-lout movement is largely made up of silly religious wingnuts like you.

StanW January 22, 2016 at 2:24 pm

So your doctorate in Geology makes you an expert in human biology?

Sharon Diehl January 22, 2016 at 2:43 pm

Stanley, silly male without a uterus, and who doesn’t gush blood once a month, or who has never been pregnant, yes, I am certainly the EXPERT on MY woman’s body and MY reproductive health needs–not a laughable male religious fruitcake.

StanW January 22, 2016 at 2:45 pm

Yet you let men tell you what you can and can’t do with your body all the time. How very sad you are.

Sharon Diehl January 22, 2016 at 3:35 pm

“If you’re so worried about abortion, get snipped. There. You’ve
controlled the only body you get to control.”

StanW January 22, 2016 at 3:37 pm

If you are so enamored with taking human life, take your own and spare the rest of us.

Sharon Diehl January 23, 2016 at 4:45 am

Honey, I have nothing to do with your human life….there is nothing to “spare”. What a silly creature you are; you must be religious.

You have nothing whatsoever to do with my human life. “Women’s bodies belong to them, and only to them. What we choose to do with ourselves, what we choose to risk–pregnancy and childbirth is always a risk–is our decision.

Our bodies, our lives, our rights.”

StanW January 24, 2016 at 6:00 pm

It is NOT your body, it is your child’s body. Stop being so selfish!

Sharon Diehl January 24, 2016 at 6:45 pm

“The “selfish” remark comes from a deeply ingrained biblical belief that a woman’s life is not her own to enjoy for herself….that her born duty is to spend her life serving and taking care of others. Therefore, a woman who chooses not to have kids, or limits the number of kids, and lives her own life on her own terms, is considered “selfish” for shirking that supposed predestined duty to be taking care of other people.”

How you can be selfish towards something that doesn’t
exist? “Selfish” implies you’re taking something away from someone else/keeping something for yourself at others’ expense. But there is no someone else; gelatinous non sentient embryos are not ‘people’…. who is getting the short shrift by not gestating? No one.

StanW January 25, 2016 at 8:59 am

You have some obsessive reason for constantly bringing up religion in your discussions of abortion, as if that is the only argument you are capable of making.
I guess your supposed advanced degree in geology did not prepare for you the ability to debate or hold an adult conversation without throwing in your hatred of Christianity.

dougmcburney January 23, 2016 at 1:38 pm

Your doctorate in geochemistry/geology had nothing to do with your decision to kill your baby. It was your selfishness that drove you to it. And you know it was wrong, yet you scream that it was right. This is why you will be condemned.

I barely graduated high school, and even I know that fertilization is an event, and not a state of being of the human ovum. A “fertilized egg” is in fact a human being.

And a righteous God ensures that those 5 out of 9 children who do not survive to implantation, (due to the fallen nature of the universe) are gathered to himself. And I’m certain that’s one of the reasons He extends His mercy to this wicked world. Because His harvest is great, every day.

And you’ll meet all those children, (including the one you murdered) on Judgment Day. Repent, or they will judge you unworthy.

Sharon Diehl January 23, 2016 at 2:41 pm

“Dear imaginary sky daddy that lives in the clouds, we lift our spaghetti colanders to drain the starchy waters from your noodliness. Please accept these ignorant imbeciles, who believe myth and fantasy, written by 2000 year old goat herders, who explained away anything they didn’t understand as magic, into knowledge, and not idiocy. We ask that you allow them to bathe in the warmth of your delicious sauce. May they be touched by your noodly appendage. ‘Ramen!”–Al Becca

Yes, Dougie, you really do sound this ridiculous.

Re: barely graduated high school and silly god spiel: honey, that says it all about your level of intelligence…more specifically, a lack thereof.

dougmcburney January 23, 2016 at 4:29 pm

Copying and pasting a pastafarian riff is evidence you’ve not matured spiritually since your college days. God is not a magician. You have Christians confused with Pagans. And while I never went to college, I sometimes hire people who have…

Sharon Diehl January 23, 2016 at 5:06 pm

Honey, what you rightwing religious whackos fail to
understand, is that the freedom of religion means freedom to practice your religion ON YOURSELF.

Not on all women.

“Women’s bodies belong to them, and only to them. What we
choose to do with ourselves, what we choose to risk–because pregnancy and childbirth is always a risk–is our decision.”

dougmcburney January 23, 2016 at 7:16 pm

The baby’s body you destroyed wasn’t yours. You may construct a “religion” that says it was. But God will correct you on Judgment Day.

Sharon Diehl January 23, 2016 at 9:09 pm

Sweetie, there are meds for your condition. You do know that belief in an angry invisible deity to smite your perceived enemies is associated with mental illness?

http://www(dot)realclearscience(dot)com/blog/2013/04/belief-in-punitive-god-associated-with-poor-mental-health(dot)html

dougmcburney January 24, 2016 at 11:26 am

There’s help for post abortive disorder as well. (Yes, it’s mental illness to make up for your guilt over your sin by becoming an advocate for others to participate in it). It’s called repenting for the the murder of a defenseless little baby who wanted nothing more form you than love. But you gave her hate instead. Imagine how she must have felt!

Do you ever feel like you need to apologize? What will you say to her when you meet her?

Sharon Diehl January 24, 2016 at 1:22 pm

No, dear, don’t be stupid. Pro-louts wail that women will be psychologically damaged by their fictional “post-abortion syndrome”, which the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and the American Psychological Association have stated does not exist–their studies demonstrate that women who have mental problems post abortion, had those mental problems before an abortion.

You seriously need to see a therapist about these wacky religious delusions of yours to be a petty dictator over women’s
lives.

dougmcburney January 24, 2016 at 4:48 pm

I cannot be a dictator over your life. You can do what’s right in your own eyes. But murder will still be murder, with the punishment that follows.

Sharon Diehl January 22, 2016 at 2:11 pm

It’s even written by a ‘Christian’.
