In fact our founding editor somewhat rudely referred to him as a “pre-scandal Bill Cosby parroting political talking points instead of Cliff Huxstable lines.”

This week Carson offered a decidedly non-Huxstable (albeit combustible) viewpoint when he told CNN’s Chris Cuomo that being homosexual was a choice – and that homosexuals had control over their sexual orientation.
“Absolutely,” Carson told Cuomo. “Because a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight — and when they come out, they’re gay. So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question.”
Okay … we will ask ourselves that question. Right after we ask Carson (running in third place in most 2016 GOP presidential polls) what in the hell he was thinking aligning himself with the Mike Huckabee/ Rick Santorum wing of the “Republican” party.
Because that’s the surest way to torpedo any shot at becoming president … not to mention alienating broad swaths of independent voters (to say nothing of younger “Republican” voters).
Seriously Ben … what were you thinking?
Beyond the political ramifications, though, this ongoing GOP obsession with sexual orientation – and other forms of imposed social conservative sanctimony – is just wrong. It is not up to us to judge … nor is it up to our governments to impose definitions of marriage on religious institutions.
Individual congregations should be permitted to decide who they wish – and do not wish – to marry. In fact aside from the equal enforcement of rights related to civil unions, government should stay the hell out of this debate entirely – a view we’ve articulated on multiple occasions.
We don’t care if being gay is a choice or something people are “born with,” all we care is that government stop appropriating unto itself “sovereignty” over marriage – one way or the other.

I believe you and Buz are arguing two entirely different topics. One is choice that we do have control over. The other side of that coin, there are some things in life where we don’t have a choice. Like someone born with a life long mental illness (at least that is the nicest term those psychologists have used) or disease. Not all brains or bodies are wired the same way, however, given the context of the word choice, it is used in an environmental sense IMO, not in the sense of any defect.

It is my opinion government has no right to regulate nor give tax breaks to married couples period. That is nothing more than traditional religious doctrine. Doesn’t mean the Church, a private institution needs to acknowledge their union, but I do believe in equal treatment.

FYI my hairdresser used to be a homosexual, one of the sweetest people I know. Never heard him complain about unfair treatment which always surprised me. We were friends for years, still are to my knowledge just haven’t seen him in a very long time. His brother died, he and significant other raised children, wife too strung out, or so I heard.
I have to say that I just started visiting this site and that these comment sections are hilarious.
