THAT’S WHAT HIS PAID HACKS SAY …

|| By FITSNEWS || This website has no problem with solar power … in fact we’ve written favorably about it in the past (and have slammed conventional utilities for their self-serving policies).

Our energy philosophy is simple: We’re for whatever keeps the lights on at the lowest cost to the consumer – and while we’d be willing to pay a premium for energy derived exclusively from environmentally sustainable sources, we don’t want government dipping into our pockets to subsidize such projects.

Let the market do its job …

Anyway, Big Solar has found a curious ally of late in Roberta Combs – the sanctimonious leader of the Christian Coalition of America (an organization she basically drove into the ground a decade ago).

“As Christians, we recognize the biblical mandate to care for God’s creation and protect our children’s future,” Combs wrote in a recent Christian Coalition blog post.

Meanwhile her daughter – Michele Combs – is also the co-founder of a group called Young Conservatives for Energy Reform, which claims to be championing “a global transformation toward cleaner, more secure, energy choices that create American jobs and protect our environment.”

Hmmmmm …

Look, we’re all for the notion of Biblical stewardship.  And we’ve got no problem with any of that “heard it all before” rhetoric emanating from the younger Combs’ “young conservative” energy group.

Here’s the thing, though … can any of it be trusted?

Hell no …

In 2009, the Christian Coalition of America came out in support of the far left “cap and trade” energy tax – legislation so radical it attracted only one “Republican” sponsor in the entire U.S. Congress: Liberal Lindsey Graham.

“I’m real proud of Senator Graham,” the elder Combs said at the time. “He’s a man of lots of wisdom.”

Really?  According to estimates from U.S. president Barack Obama’s own Treasury Department, the proposal would have cost the average American family as much as $4,000 a year in additional energy costs.   Frankly, we fail to see the wisdom in that … only the economic hardship.

FITS was all over that scam … relentlessly exposing not only Graham’s tortured stance on the legislation, but also pulling the veil back and exposing all the liberal environmental money that poured into South Carolina (masquerading as “conservative” support, of course)

So … has this liberal money now been used to buy off the “Christian Coalition?”  Are Combs and her daughter turning tricks for Big Solar in an effort to reclaim some of the relevance they’ve lost over the years?

Good question …

Again … we support solar power.  And will continue to support it – invoking the very stewardship angle invoked by Combs.  What will we never support, though?  Legislation at any level of government which forces taxpayers to subsidize energy generation – or which bestows to one energy provider (or energy source) an unfair competitive advantage over another.

In fact last time we checked, there’s a Christian commandment against such behavior … to say nothing of Christ’s own “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” imperative.

“Let the market do its job …”

That’s all well and good Willie. The only problem is that this approach assumes that the market understands delayed gratification.

Unfortunately, I think big energy executives are mostly concerned with making sure their immediate needs are met…i.e. making sure the yacht is fueled up and ready for the weekend trip to the Bahamas–or maximizing the shareholder ROI on the upcoming quarterly filing.

I’d be all for letting “the market” run things, but unfortunately, the market doesn’t have the best track record when there is no oversight or regulation. Indeed, the “what have you done for me lately” and “I want it now” attitudes tend to prevail.

Just look at space programs, NASA had several failures at the beginning and even more recent failures. Now that NASA has been scaled down we have private programs, Virgin and SpaceX that are also seeing failures. These have not bankrupted the companies but with space travel the slightest thing going wrong means a critical failure and explosion. If they do not get their things in order they will lose investors and shut down, and those investors will probably avoid investing in space companies in the future. You also have to consider that these programs are based on decades of research and scientific discovery by NASA, untold billions of dollars in research they don’t have to do, which is the only thing making it affordable enough for investors to even consider in the first place.

Building the interstate is another good example. Building a road is something a private company can do, and some companies do have their own road systems like the lumber industry. Building the interstate system though is building high quality roads across the entire United States. This needs an insane amount of money to build, has to be able to deal with building across all contiguous states, and required eminent domain to acquire the land to build. This would be a nightmare to figure out outside of federal government.

It may not be the best buddy you have but some things government does better.

Conservative claims are just so ridiculous that no one with any common sense can even entertain them even for a second. Investing in solar power production would raise the average family’s power bill by $4,000 a year? Sure… Just like Obamacare was going to triple the average family’s insurance premiums.

Mais – Eles falam portugeuse. Buz – Brazilians will speak Spanish with you only after you try and speak Portugeuse. Man, that country has a monopoly on really awesome women. I think it’s the mix of Portugal and German. With a touch of Italian on the side. That and they start wearing heels at age 3.

The population of Brazil has major dna from native peoples, as well. Also the descendents of CSA diehards who moved there after the Civil War. I’d forgotten about the fact that they mainly speak Portugese. I’ve never actually been there myself, but I had a friend (now deceased) who used to go all the time, and he told me about the termas.

An interesting side note, Brazil is the premier user of ethanol, with little or no government market participation any longer. Early on there was, but over time no. And they are a major oil producer but they save most of that for export. They’re also big users of solar and now getting into wind.

And, 90% of their electricty comes from hydro. But unfortunately here in the US we don’t have any rivers – I guess.

The office of regulatory staff sure doesn’t love solar! They’re in bed with SCEG, and the only people getting screwed in that bed are the consumers!
