JAILED LAWMAKER WINS HIS SEAT BACK AMID SEX SCANDAL …
|| By FITSNEWS || A liberal member of the Virginia House of Delegates won his seat back in a special election this week – despite the fact he’s serving six months in jail for inappropriate sexual interactions with a teenager.
Joe Morrissey, a 57-year-old bachelor with a history of outrageous behavior, was convicted last month of contributing to the delinquency of a minor after he was busted with nude photos of his then-17-year-old secretary on his cell phone. Both Morrissey and the woman – Myrna Pride – deny having had a sexual relationship.
In fact Pride has been defending Morrissey against allegations made by her own father, Coleman Pride – who accused Morrissey of preying on his daughter when she worked in his office two years ago.
Wow … and here we thought South Carolina had the market on political soap opera cornered!
Despite the scandal, Morrissey (who ran as an independent) received 42.3 percent of the vote from residents in Virginia’s 74th House district – easily outdistancing Democrat Kevin Sullivan (33.7 percent) and “Republican” Matt Walton (24.1 percent).
“This is a victory for the ages,” political science professor Stephen J. Farnsworth (no relation to Jimmy Lee) told The Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Indeed … but will it last?
“Mr. Morrissey’s election tonight does not change the fact that his actions fall grievously short of the standards of a public servant in the House of Delegates,” Virginia Speaker William J. Howell said.
Howell is a “Republican.”
Morrissey’s own party isn’t thrilled with his win, either, saying his “conviction and actions over the past two months were reprehensible.”
“We will be exploring every avenue in regard to his status as a member of the House of Delegates,” said House minority leader David J. Toscano and Democratic caucus chairman Scott Surovell.
For those of you keeping score at home, it would take sixty-seven members of the Virginia House to oust Morrissey from office. If such an effort were to succeed, Morrissey would become the first Virginia Delegate since 1876 to get the boot.
