POWERFUL LEGISLATIVE LEADER TO MAKE FIRST APPEARANCE IN COURT SINCE INDICTMENT
By FITSNEWS || S.C. first circuit solicitor David Pascoe has scheduled a preliminary hearing in the ongoing saga of suspended S.C. Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell.
Harrell was indicted last month on nine counts of public corruption – prompting the powerful legislative leader to suspend himself from office the following day. He’s since been arraigned, but this will be his first chance to address the allegations against him.
Pascoe’s hearing will be held on Thursday October 23 (a.k.a. tomorrow) at 10:30 a.m. EDT in court room 2B of the Richland County Judicial Center (here).
“No further information will be provided at this time,” a curt release from the solicitor’s office stated.
Harrell faces nine criminal charges at the state level – malfeasance, two counts of misconduct in office and six counts of campaign finance violations. Additionally, there is widespread speculation that he is the subject of an ongoing federal-state investigation.

Working alongside S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson and other state entities, federal investigators acting under the authority of U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles have reportedly been looking into allegations of corruption at the S.C. State House for the past nine months (at least). This investigation – which is expected to result in indictments prior to the end of the year – centers on three main areas. Those are, 1) misuse of campaign funds by members, 2) abusing public offices for personal gain and 3) vote-trading (or vote-selling) tied to the controversial February 2014 legislative election that saw Jean Toal win another term as chief justice of the state’s supreme court.
Other judicial elections may also be part of “the probe,” which has started to receive mainstream media coverage in the Palmetto State earlier this month.
Financial transactions undertaken by the Palmetto Leadership Council – a political action committee affiliated with Harrell – are also reportedly the subject of scrutiny related to the ongoing investigation. As are financial transactions associated with similar “leadership PACs” run by other lawmakers.

Two individuals told me that they have been recently interviewed about Harrell by the FBI which is in turn interviewing all of their contacts, going all the way up Harrell’s sleeve. No doubt the FBI and SLED are sharing information regarding Harrell and his corrupt cohorts. May they stew in their own juices this festive holiday season.
