Dear Friend,

On Wednesday I received an award that was meant for YOU. The “Friend of the Taxpayer Award” is yours, not mine, because you elected me and I am your employee. Without your continued support, my staff and I could never have accomplished so much.

Your strong commitment to transparency and accountability has allowed me to fight fraud, waste, and abuse. It has allowed me effect real change in state government by refinancing debt, renegotiating contracts, and demanding tougher and more frequent audits.

Your support, both morally and financially, allows me to ask the tough questions that make a lot of people uncomfortable. And believe me, a LOT of people are uncomfortable. The special interest insiders are up in arms about my efforts to use transparency and accountability to rein in their shady practices. But I don’t care about them because I work for you!

Bringing transparency and accountability to state government will save taxpayers billions of dollars over the coming years and ensure the solvency of South Carolina’s treasury.

Will you join me in continuing this fight? Donate $25 or more, and together we can reform state government. I need your help and hope you can assist me today.

Sincerely,

loftis sig

Curtis Loftis
State Treasurer

P.S. Many thanks to the South Carolina Association of Taxpayers for presenting us with this award.

Hi, Vic, Cash…Altered egos of Loftis. Loftis posting and singing his own, fake “personal praises”. His campaign is all about him. What has he done for the taxpayers of this State? He has accused people making a difference in this State of being corrupt immoral.. Is not the corruption in his camp? Giving his intimate friend 2 million dollars. Where is the transparency in this? Who paid for this ? What did he do to deserve this? A vile man, with many mental and intellectual issues. He has a dangerous temper, a foul, loathsome disease which can be spread. Wash your hands and keep the children away. Go away, Loftis

Mr Sam Griswold, President Emartius Of the SC Retirees Association, loves to post about Loftis. He, and a couple of his associates, are obsessed and constantly write these post. These post just shows what evil Mr. Loftis has to battle very day.

You must be joking! Read his own sworn testimonies and be better informed. Loftis needs to go. A vile man, very sick, who has done so much harm for the tax payers of SC. And yes, this job is the best job he ever had! And , he wants to keep it! Not qualified to be Treasurer and yes, he has wasted tax payers money. Go away, Loftis, to your old job!

Mr. Griswald, My Ryberg at $161,000, Mr. Varat at $98,000, Mr Reynolds Williams at $115,000 on the American Timberlands deal alone, can you go and actually work for the retirees? Is it possible?

A friend April 5, 2014 at 10:36 am

I will be back in a little while, Mr Griswold. I have to pick up the rest of my research that I left at my fellow researchers house. But believe me, Mr. Griswold and Mr Ryberg at $161,000 and Mr. Varat at 98,000 and Mr Reynolds Williams at $115,00 on the American Timberlands deal alone, I will be back and following you, and talking about total compensation packages, gifts and freebies, Wall Street money largess, and many many more things.
The Commission office leaks like a piece of cheap cloth. and I have lots to say.
It is a tai for tat, Mr. Griswold.. And I love this.

churchlady23 April 5, 2014 at 4:02 pm

You are a fool with no ideas “I have to pick up the rest of my research that I left at my fellow researchers house”. Really? You would be better served by reading and listening to the sworn testimonies in front of the senate finance committee. Read also the testimonies by Loftis and many others. Easy to get. Public knowledge. You must be informed, please, please ,. Do so before you “have a lot to say”

A Friend April 5, 2014 at 5:02 pm

Hershel Harper, state employee, SC Investment Commission.
Last year pay, bonus and compensation package: $699,000.
Plus cell phone, no limit on personal or sick days,

Person responsible for bottom 20% of performance of the investment commision.

Monday I will post the estimated retirement benefit, and rather unusual “fringe benefits,”

churchlady23 April 6, 2014 at 5:05 pm

We will be waiting, Curt. Please, include the salaries of the people working in your office. Amazing how much they make. Transparency and accountability needed here and it starts with you. How about the State plane? How many trips have you taken on the tax payers money? I can go on..

Nan April 6, 2014 at 5:24 pm

I heard the fringe benefit package is worth 30% on top of the salary. Is that true?

M326 April 6, 2014 at 5:49 pm

Nan, calculate your own fringes. What are they worth? Curtis, we recognize you even when you use a girl’s name. Telling.

A Friend April 6, 2014 at 4:26 pm

Greg Ryberg make $161,000 per year, with fringe benefits, he makes over $209,000 per year.
He is not qualified to sit on the commission.
He is not qualified to be the Chief Operating Officer.
His job is to target Treasurer Loftis.
That is correct. $209,000 per year of retiree money to politically target an elected official.

Pam April 6, 2014 at 4:59 pm

He is always in Aiken or at Sullivan’s Island. When does he work?

M326 April 6, 2014 at 5:45 pm

Pam, no matter where he is, he is working. Just like Curtis is today.

A Vol April 6, 2014 at 5:49 pm

The State Treasurer makes less than $95,000 per year. Loftis makes 4 or 5 times that in his retirement. Somehow, I don’t think he is in the this for the money. Unless we are talking about Sam and Reynolds and Greg and …

M326 April 6, 2014 at 6:37 pm

$95,000? Most South Carolineans would give their left hand to make that amount. However, Curtis is lucky that ALL constitutional officers are paid the same by law. If it were based on merit and qualifications, he would be earning much less. He has no background or education to qualify him for the job at all.

Marie April 6, 2014 at 10:04 pm

I think Sam Griswold has a Ph.D. So if you want to be correct, Mr. Loftis, it should be Dr. Griswold. Are you sure this is him?

A friend April 5, 2014 at 9:13 am

Greg Ryberg is paid $161,00 per year. Danny Varit is paid $98,000 per year, both hired by Reynolds Williams to target Loftis. The retirees, who make about $20,000 are paying their salaries.
A quarter of a million per year of retirees money paid used to spew this hate. Amazing.

Reply
Kyle April 6, 2014 at 5:23 pm

Is this the same Greg Ryberg that had the no bid state contract for hauling fuel? I always wondered how he managed to make millions off the state with a no bid contract. I suppose it is a good thing to be a conservative with lots of friends in state government.
Millions of dollars in a no bid state contract is a wonderful thing.

M326 April 6, 2014 at 5:47 pm

Curtis, at least try to be original. What a dip!

A friend April 6, 2014 at 5:53 pm

A dip? Is a dip a wealthy man like Greg Ryberg coming back to government so he can be close to 27 billion dollars? Or a wealthy man like Reynolds Williams making !15,000 on the American Timberlands deal alone? If that is being a dip, can I be one too?

churchlady23 April 6, 2014 at 6:34 pm

Curt, Let’s look at your office and the very well paid staff. All 31 members, maybe more. Chief of staff $120,510.00 was your friend (William Leidinger ) All make more than 50,000.00 . Ten make more than $80,000.00. Yes, I wonder what the retiree who make $20,000.00 think about that. I know what they think. Transparency must start with you. As you say “the retirees are paying their salaries”

A Friend April 6, 2014 at 6:47 pm

I can’t speak for Loftis but I would suggest that these people have to work 40 hours a week in their offices, not a few hours a week while longing in Sullivans Island or Aiken or Greenville of Charlotte.

Elliott April 7, 2014 at 8:22 pm

The above staffers are not paid from the retiree trust fund. They are full-time state employees that have significant state wide responsibilities. They are worth every penny of what they are paid.

Guest April 7, 2014 at 8:47 pm

Not the point. Point being, curtis brags of saving taxpayer dollars, yet has continually hired his friends at high salaries and created positions that have never been necessary in the past, ie, chief of staff and PR.

Guest post April 10, 2014 at 7:03 am

17 out of the 33 on the “over $50,000” salary database were hired by curt. Some of them replaced former workers, some are new positions. But one thing is for certain, the ones that replaced prior workers are definitely higher salaries than previously, and obviously the new positions would be higher since they are new positions. Talk about the good ole boy system. Seems to be working for curt. Hire in your friends and pay them well my friend, your ride is coming to an end.

A Friend April 5, 2014 at 10:24 am

Is it true the state employee hershal Harper that is responsible for the poor performance of the retirement fund makes over $600,000 per year? How can that be? Retirees make $20,000 per year.
Perhaps Mr Ryberg at $161,000 or Mr Varat at $98,000 per year or Mr Reynolds Williams who made $115,000 or one deal alone can tell us? |Mr Griswwald, you are the postmaster for this bunch. Can you explain to the policemen, firemen and teachers why this guy makes 10 to 15 times more than they do?
Your buddy,

Loftis must go. 200 million of the retirement trust fund lost, when he settled with the Bank of New York. And he signed a 10 year contract with the same bank! All by himself> Gave his friend 2 million dollars and others attorneys 7 million for a return of 22 million. He should be facing a Grand Jury. Be concerned and be glad that the Commission is standing by. Loftis is the one that is unhinged and he needs to go. We will be better without him.

Testimonies have been televised, posted on the Senate site and you can still go to see them. I urge you to view them. Need them, I have copies on my table. Just ask. Are you Curtis Loftis? I think so. This is IMPORTANT. Your state treasurer is spending his Sunday in a ridiculous on line rant because the four separate and independent investigations of allegations he made against the Retirement System Investment Commission found NOTHING out of order. He wasted hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on investigating completely unfounded allegations. SLED, the Attorney General, the Ethics Commission, the Inspector General and the Senate found no truth to his allegations. Not one allegation was upheld. What does this tell you? Could all this time and effort been spent more productively? I would think so. I have to agree with one of the other commentators: Curtis, take your medication and go to bed. Employees of the State Treasurer’s Office, be invisible tomorrow! Even Lady Susan agrees.

So maybe we have to question the validity of the allegations. You, sir, are a fool. You have found NO fraud, waste or abuse. Had you done so, somebody would have been arrested or fired. Nobody has. Oh, my Gd. It’s like a voice from the grave! Thanks so much! He did say nice things about those Senators who found him to be deficient. Bipartisan. Nonpartisan. Objective study. Found Loftis’ allegations to be false and apologized to the Investment Commission Staff for him having made them. If I were Loftis, I would be very embarrassed. He praised them until he heard their conclusions. Typical Loftis. A small man.

It appears that what you are implying is that if the Senators agreed with Curt everything was OK but if they didn’t agree they were whitewashing something. Do I understand you correctly. One last thing, wasn’t it the Senator’s job to get to the bottom of the rather public debate between Curt and his fellow Commissioners? Having looked at the videos it seems to me that they were very balanced in their questions as they sought the truth. Do you not agree?

Shame on you. And why wouldn’t they support your opponent? And why keep commenting on your own article using all these fictitious names? Guess you can’t get much positive comment from the audience at large. That’s OK, you take care of it yourself. What an amazing ego!

M326 April 5, 2014 at 9:23 am

PS. Ryberg is worth every penny! Thank goodness we have him.

A friend April 5, 2014 at 10:17 am

Yes, of course you would think so Mr. Griswold. The retirees Trust Fund is paying Mr. Ryberg $161,000 and Mr Varat 98,000 per year and Mr. Williams a $161,000 on the American Timberlands deal alone. Not you. Your share is a penny r too, but your get lots of pleasure from your role as Hate Master.

But we understand. You have lots of personal interest at stake. So keep posting. Enjoy yourself.

Yours, Vol
PS Hey, Lets talk about the bonus plan. Is it true the retires, that make on average $20,000, are paying Hershal Harper over $600,000 per year for lousy performance?

churchlady23 April 5, 2014 at 10:23 am

What is wrong, Loftis? Bullying, lying and hate do not work for you anymore?

A Friend April 5, 2014 at 10:30 am

Mr. Griswald,
I am interested in the employee that has taken, most recently, a top of the line Apple iPad from a money manager. You know what I am talking about. Do I need to describe it, and the cover he purchased for it? Do i need to give the dye and the money manager name?

Dont confuse him with Mr. Ryberg at $161,000 per year or Mr. Varat at $98,000 per year or Mr. Reynolds Williams who made $115,000 of the American Timberlands deal alone.

Don’t confuse him with the over $600,000 per year state employee that guided the fund to the bottom 20% performance.

And lets not confuse him with the former chief investment officer Bob Borden that was flying back and forth the Bermuda on private jets owned by the Wall Street money manager Apollo.

No, Mr. Griswald, lets talk about free gifts.

churchlady23 April 5, 2014 at 3:21 pm

No clue? Please talk about it. We love facts not lies.

William David Francis April 5, 2014 at 8:04 pm

It has now been ten hours and Friend has presented no facts therefore is is reasonable to assume Friend is none other than Curtis Loftis.

churchlady23 April 6, 2014 at 4:05 pm

I think that you are right!

M326 April 6, 2014 at 4:15 pm

You, sir, are obviously correct. Can you imagine, a Constitutional Officer of our state so obsessed that he responds to his own article in this manner? He spends hours doing this. He needs to get a life and spend his time working for the taxpayers instead of his own ego.

churchlady23 April 5, 2014 at 9:37 am

Who started all this? Loftis did with his multiple allegations which have been proven false. He wasted tax payers money and valuable time to investigate these lies. Did the SC association of tax payers investigated this before giving you this plaque? I doubt it. Sick..

A Friend April 5, 2014 at 10:09 am

My my Mr Sam Griswold and Mr Ryberg at $161,000 per year and Mr. Varat at 98,000 per year and My Reynolds Williams at 115,000 on the American Timberlands deal alone. You are active today. Have you found away to get even more retiree money? Perhaps a retiree trust fund “bonus” per hate filled post? Why not? Sounds like the kind of thing you guys would do.
Yours truly,
Vol

churchlady23 April 6, 2014 at 8:33 pm

Curt, let’s review the salaries of the staff in your office. Paid plenty. How about the State plane, and the rides you take on the tax payers backs? Are you being reimbursed for your mileage and the use of your car? You are an hypocrite and you need to go. Nobody can trust you, nobody can be near you and I do not see how you can stay on the Commission. You have wasted time and money for the State. You are not able to understand the truth. Too bad , you have many mental and behavioral issues. Who can work with you?

This guy’s ego knows no end. He comments on his own article using fictitious names. Look at all the one time posters exactly 16 hours ago (at time of this posting). Loftis or I will eat my hat. I just wish he would do his job if he is capable of it which seems questionable. All we have is his word that he is ferreting out fraud waste and abuse. Specifically, who has been arrested, what laws have been changed, who has been fired? The answer is negative for all. I, for one would like to see a few actual results put on the table instead of all this self congratulation and rhetoric. Show me some results, Loftis–laws changed, people arrested or fired. I don’t think you can. People commit fraud waste and abuse and, when found, get fired or arrested or both. So much for your fraud waste and abuse. I’m uncomfortable, all right. Uncomfortable with a blowhard incompetent. Even voters as ill-informed as South Carolinians will soon recognize what a fraud, waste and abuse this guy is.

None of us judge your decisions re your politics or lifestyle. We just miss the old Curt. You need to surround yourself with folks who will give you a true evaluation of your actions. You are getting awful advice from folks who care not about you but about what they think you want to hear.

I, too, don’t care about your alternative lifestyle but you need to get some smart folks around you, stop being so volatile and work better with others. You always had one problem: it was always about YOU. Ever since you were a kid. There are other people and other beliefs that are just as legitimate as YOURS. So cool it, guy. It will be OK.

You see, I like nice things and lying has helped me and my friends get very nice things. (That reminds me I need to call Reynolds and see what today’s take was)

Hi, you may have guessed my name is Sam Griswold. I, along with my friends Reynolds Williams, Greg Ryberg and Danny Varit, along with a couple of folks you don’t know, also write under fake names like Churchlady, NoAxToGrind, Will, Max and others. I love writing nasty things about Loftis because he is on to us. He knows we pay high fees and get low returns. He knows we reward our friends with retiree money. He knows we have no oversight and he knows we love it that way.

Anyway, I know know one reads these post, but as a crazy man that does not like to see the flow of money slow down to the insiders, it makes me feel good to write rumor and lie and distortions. I suppose John Wayne Gacie felt good while killing and eating scores of people and this makes me feel good.

I will be writing soon as I have nothing to do. Except be hateful. I that is so much fun.

The only one guessing is you, Curtis. You got a problem. Four independent investigations of your allegations of wrongdoing at the Investment Commission and not one was upheld. Why? This is beginning to look irrational as are your posts here. Perhaps the General Assembly will solve this mess by taking you out of the picture. Lots of retirees will be relieved at that. You want to be re-elected? Better stop this childish crap. Do you have no adult supervision?

Curt Loftis is a joke with his staff, with other government leaders, and financial professionals everywhere. His oversized head turns beat red at least 5 times a day.
His TV commercials are a joke. By reading his flight log on the state plane, you’d think he was Chuck Yeager. His chief of staff is a complete idiot. And his lack of transparency his truly reaching new heights.

Yes, let’s look at Loftis and his staff, Chief of staff at $120,510.00. Five program managers III. at $112,270.00, 106,018.00, $105,571.00, $104,134.00., $84,460.00 . Five programs managers II, $80,622.00, $ 77,500.00. and more. Seven programs managers I, $72,100.00, and more. Three senior application analysts. Attorney at $95,000.00. DPTY/DIV Director =EXEC Comp $ 95,790.00. And many more, like audit managers, three senior applications analysts all paid plenty. Five accountant fiscal analysts.. All paid plenty. I wonder what the average retiree with $22,000.00 thinks of this waste of tax payers money. Transparency, please Mr. Loftis.

Anyway, lying about Loftis is my job. I sit here all day and post all around the internet. Sometime my friend Reynolds helps me as he has lots of time (he is making money hand over fist off the retirees). Sometimes I get little Greg Ryberg to help. He has lots of time because he made a fortune selling rubbers, rolling papers and lottery tickets to the masses. Then, surprisingly, he sold his business to venture capitalist for a ton of money. In fact, it is a small world as those venture capitalist are connected to the Investment Commission that he helped create and now runs. Oh well, enough of that, I got go spew some filth.

Recheck the salary listing. Newly appointed chief of staff earns $120,000 and it should be noted that she is a state retiree who is probably drawing a retirement of around $40,000-$45,000 on top of her $120,000 current salary. Newly hired PR guy earns $75,000 where former PR guy (Brian DeRoy) only earned $56,650. Yes, let’s check into his payroll. You people rooting for him are in for a rude awakening very soon. He has cried wolf so many times its no longer amusing or entertaining. How much money has he cost the state with all of these frivolous accusations? And yet you guys are still behind him? Says a lot. I assume you apply that standard to everyone. It is just as cowardly to anonymously make unsubstantiated and false claims about the members and staff of the Investment Commission as it is to anonymously allege that Mr. Loftis is not qualified to serve on the Commission, a position I hold.

I have had the opportunity to observe Mr. Loftis over the past two and a half years and have learned that he is your best friend when you agree with him but the moment you take a position different from his you become his enemy. I have personally been the subject of one of his verbal attacks for nothing more egregious than expressing an opinion that he didn’t agree with. I have no doubt that Curtis Loftis considers himself right about the positions he takes but he needs to learn that in this nation we all have the right to our own opinions.

About 50% of the comments made here are by Curtis Loftis under various aliases. This should tell you something about our Treasurers’s state of mind. Probably 25% are comments by me. Think what you will–I am not the Treasurer. Regardless of what Curtis claims, the rest are not by me or him. They are by people who seem to have serious concerns about his competence to be State Treasurer. I concur with them. Any Constitutional Officer of this state who spends his time in this manner really needs to come under close scrutiny. This guy has a mental problem and it is beginning to affect the state’s ability to manage its resources. This is not a joke. We need to look at alternatives. Brian Adams is running on the Republican ticket. I don’t know much about him but we do have a CHOICE here. That’s lucky.
