A long time ago Mencken noted that news media (mainly just newspapers and magazines back then) tended to thrive when on the attack and wilt when meekly approving those in charge. Even Hurst relented briefly and paid for it it seems. If still accurate, one wonders why more media don’t take the lesson and at least try once again in this muckraker direction. WIS and Free Times seemed to have given it some consideration, and some Net sites live for the effort of course. The State long long ago had the habit, we all know, and its heavy price then may understandably give it some pause, but heck, political dregs and klannish juries in Lexington County are not as big of a threat to press freedom as they once were. Anyway, The State can get CWPs and .40-caliber guarantees to its freedom nowadays, even for in the reporters’ traditional stomping grounds in seedy bars.
