Donald Gist – the brother-in-law of Columbia, S.C. mayor Steve Benajamin – was shot and killed in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday afternoon. According to Queen City police, Gist’s shooting occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. at a Mini Mart in the 2100 block of Beatties Ford Road.

Gist is the brother of South Carolina circuit court judge DeAndrea Gist Benjamin.

The circumstances surrounding Gist’s shooting were not immediately clear, although local television station WCNC TV reports that Gist and the as-yet-unnamed shooter did not know each other.

“The shock and sadness of past few hours have been difficult to bear,” said Benjamin – who was traveling in Aspen, Colorado. “We will remember Donald as he was: a loving husband, father, son and brother.”

Obviously this website can’t stand Benjamin (a.k.a. “Mayorhood”) but we don’t wish this sort of tragedy on anyone …

Accordingly, we’ll keep his family in our prayers.

Huh? December 7, 2013 at 8:37 am

Just curious. How do they know that he did not know his attacker? Why so eager to point that out so early in the investigation?

Especially since every news source other than the one noted reports they did.

the shooter probably said “I didn’t shoot that guy – I’ve never seen him before in my life!”

From the State…”The preliminary investigation indicates the shooting wasn’t a random act of violence, as the shooter and the male victim appear to have known each other, Charlotte police said.”

Yes, everything I read said he knew his attacker and it was not random.

It makes you wonder. Could it have been a drug deal, especially given the rumors of Hizonner’s appreciation for white powdery substances, as well as similar appreciations attributed to his former police chief?

Or could it be he was a victim of one of these?

Sounds like a black legal issue or perhaps, some other collateral issue, perhaps math, circular in form…definitively, not good though, sadness.

The article also did not state who the attacker was and whether he was apprehended. Great reporting.

I hope the anti-gun nuts don’t notice a gun was involved.

Would you rather be beaten to death with an axe or shot?

Reply
Smirks December 9, 2013 at 8:59 am

That depends on where on the body you are axed/shot. :P

I’d rather be put in a body bag with ice until I’m dead… no wait! I’d rather be hung by my wrists and my legs beaten with a baton until a blood clot… no.. no wait! drowned by degrees… beaten unconscious and revived with meth.. yeah.. that’s what I’d rather… but if I can’t get that, I’d rather slide down a mile-long razor blade…

How about you? What’s your fantasy?

Crickets in the media about the whole story. The “word” must have gone out that it was not to be covered.

Maybe Steve and his bro-in-law both had a substance abuse problem. It only hurts the families.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Why is the Mayor of Columbia on the fringe of so many criminal investigations? His car accident the night after he was elected, his rumored involvement with SC State University, the real estate partnership currently under investigation and now his brother-in-law is shot and killed? Even his wife’s election to the Circuit Court was not without incident. Wake up Richland County and City of Columbia residents!

Anybody know about the arrest record for Donald E. Gist in Fulton County? 7/05/06.

And according to Rich. Cty. judicial, the 1998 case for violation for probation. Oh, and that open container arrest in 2004? Many more.

And that arrest for breach of trust with fraudulent intent.

I wonder if T-Bone’s wife let this thug out on parole like she did with one of Kelly Hunnewell’s murderers.

Oh what sweet justice if that were the case.

Shooter has a nice past including drug dealing. Mr. Gist father has a past history for physical abuse in a parking lot. Obit only list family. I guess other then the family he never did anything but get him self murdered?
